I feel this is one of the best large puppy formulas out there especially if you are a concerned pet owner about overly high protein levels. There are many articles to go around about this, yet they all end up the same…..there isn’t enough evidence to prove that high protein in large pups has any devastating effect. But with guaranteed maximums in Calcium and Fat….which will produce problems if not properly balanced and with plenty of protein at 26% (you can supplement more with Wellness 95% Turkey or 95% Chicken….or try Evangers 100% Chicken) this is great large pup food.

Wellness Large Breed Puppy has caused nothing but loose stool for my German Shepherd puppy. He’s overly thirsty and his flatulence is ridiculous. We’ve just switched over to Orijen Large Breed Puppy formula and it’s working well.

  3. Jess says:

Kristen, thats an excellent choice(it’s what I feed), but keep in mind GSD’s are known for that. Tony is my 6th GSD and I keep a can of pure pumpkin around just because of that reason. GSD’s get loose stools quite a bit when they are puppies. 1 tablespoon for every pound well do the trick and never keep it longer than 31/2 days and store it in a different container after you open it. I use libbys, with nothing added, just pure pumpkin or you can get it at a pet store.

I transitioned my Labrador Retriever puppy to Wellness Large Breed puppy over the course of about seven days off of Pro Plan Performance which the breeder was feeding.
I have had nothing but problems with loose stool in spite of what I try, pup is now in his 10th week and I took him to the Vet three days ago. He did review of stool under microscope and found nothing, No Coccidia, No Giardia nothing shows up. We have put the pup on Albon and he has been on a comination of cooked rice and chicken 50% or more of the intake, also feeding some pumpkin and/sweet potato, bottom line is he has passed only one stool that looks decent, nothing has worked so far. I am about to switch off the Wellness but am afraid I will make the problem worse. Anybody have any ideas?

  5. Karen says:

I tried Orijen Large Breed puppy also. Yes it firmed up his stools and makes clean up great. However he would strain to go and there was blood in his stool.
Drops of it. I had it tested and all was fine. I was told a little grain can be a good thing. I would much rather see my dog poop with ease than have to strain. Not a good thing. Lots of hype in Orijen dog food as being the “best” I have changed foods and add raw meat to his diet.
