Wellness Core Ocean Dog Food Review
Wellness Core Ocean formula provides your dogs with the benefits of a raw diet in a dry version. Wellness Core Ocean is great for the people who what the benefits of a raw diet but are unable. Its not as good as a raw diet but its one of the closest formulas you can get. Wellness Core Ocean is not recommend for dogs under the age of 1, or inactive dogs. Due to the high amount of protein Wellness Core Ocean formula is great for working breed, compitition dogs and hunting dogs. If your dogs exerts high amounts of energy this would be a great formula to pick.
Wellness Core First Five Ingredients Review:
- Whitefish
- Whitefish Meal
- Salmon Meal
- Menhaden Fish Meal
- Potatoes
The first ingredient Whitefish is inclusive of its water content and once removed it should fall furthur down in the ingredients list, thus making Whitefish Meal the first true ingredient.
Following the first ingredient are three named meat ingredients. This is where most of your protein is going to come from. As with all fish ingredients ethoxyquin is always a hot topic. Wellness offers a statement on their website stating the use of ethoxyquin-free ingredients.
Potatoes, the fifth ingredient is a great source of carbohydrates to fuel you dogs energetic lifestyle.

Review

I would rate it 9.5 stars.
I have two Cairns a wheaten (Charlie) and a brindle (Griffy). Charlie had skin rashes, hot spots, would pull his own fur out by the mouthfull. Trips to the vet and drugs weren’t helping. I started looking for better solutions and found that all grains rice, corn, etc. were a problem for dogs so we looked until we found Welness Core Ocean. Immediately his skin cleared up and he was back to being his old self. Charlie also has a sensitive stomach and throws up alot, but not with the Wellness Core Ocean. And as for Griffy, he was overwieght and has lost over 5 pounds so far! Both dogs eat it without hesitation, but they don’t gorge on it.
Pros: No grain, no food allergies (at least for my Cairns), wieght control, small servings help offset the price.
Cons: Price is a little up there but I save a fortune on vet bills and lost sleep worring over skin and stomach issues. Smell, not the most pleasant smelling food but the Cairns like it so who am I to argue.
Conclusion: We tried other grain free foods but the Cairns didn’t like them and would only eat when very hungry; gorging and then throwing up so, Wellness Core Ocean is by far our preference.
My name is Pete and I have a awesome German Shepherd that is 2 1/2 years old. I tried all the top line foods like Innova Evo, Origen and the only food that worked for these sensitive stomach/itching breeds was Wellness Core Original. I research a lot because my dog is my life and my best friend! The food overall is great and I have no complaints at all. I still highly recommend to everybody that every dog should get fresh apples, cottage cheese, raw egg, carrots, celery and low fat yogurt (in the raw) on a weekly basis additional to the regular feedings!! No dog food has 100% complete nutrition without these fresh ingredients on a weekly basis in my opinion. Feed these fresh ingredients in portions according to your dogs weight. Think about it, put a piece of celery for a example in the dog food bag just for a few days, it turns a brown color and dries out and I’m positive it lost its nutrients because its dried out! Think of all the important vegetables that sit in the dog food bags several weeks before someone actually buys it. Please, everybody feed your dogs well as we do ourselves! These animals depend on us for their health! (Pete D. from Schererville, IN)
I have an eighteen month old Labrador Retriever. He had some issues with his anal glands (very soft bowel movements, diarrhea at times with a horrible smell!) After taking him to the Vet and spending a lot of money on treatment and trying various expensive foods (including adding pumpkin), I did a lot of research and read the formula on Wellness Core Ocean. I realized that it has a much higher percentage of fiber than most formulas that I had tried (Orijen among others, that is a great food, just not right for my dog’s particular problem). So ever since I started feeding him Wellness Core Ocean, I solved the problem! I would recommend this particular formula to anybody whose dog has similar issues. He likes it and his coat looks beautiful too! It is pricey but so are other top formulas that did not resolve the problem, and my dog deserves the best because…he IS the best dog in the entire whole wide world!!!
My golden boy is 14 months and has a sensitive stomach. He has been eating Pro Plan Salmon and Rice with no problems at all, except he smells like FISH. Are there any fish based foods out there that don’t make your best friends breath and everything else stink of the sea?? We tried Wellness Puppy food but it was too rich, would like to try the Core Ocean food if it doesn’t make him stink or get sick…
Thanks,
Rich
since he is mostly done growing, the wellness core is fine (it has too much calcium for a growing large breed). it has much more meat content than the pro plan or wellness puppy’ in fact the pro plan salmon is not even a salmon based food. salmon is listed first, but that is because its the heaviest ingredient before cooking (due to water weight). after cooking the salmon is way down the list, leaving it a truly rice based foods. you really have to see named meat meals listed first, as they have very little water content to begin with. Core is a great food, but it is pricey.
Thanks Derek. Right now we are transitioning him to Cali Naturals Herring and sweet potato and have no problems to report..what is your take on that food, I know they were bought out by P&G, but the place where I get the food says they are yet to ruin this particlar one.The reason why they recommended Cali was because of the options they have with food for sensitive stomachs. They said if he can handle the Herring, he should be ok with the chicken and most definitely the lamb.
When he was younger we tried to get him on the Wellness Large Breed Puppy Health Super5Mix Dog Food, but he had diahhrea so we put him back on the Pro Plan Salmon. Could the chicken be the problem or food that is too rich?? I have no problem spending $$ on food that is good. Also is there a fish based food that doesn’t smell fishy??

Rich, my dog was on C.N. since he was 8 weeks old, he is now 20 months. He got explosive diarrhea on the last bag and I ended up giving the rest to paws, so you can’t get me to believe p&g hasn’t begun sourcing from cheaper suppliers. I have even taken it off my list.
