The Honest Kitchen “Keen” Dog Food

Review

“Keen” Is The Honest Kitchen’s least expensive pet food of the mix and is formulated for dogs of all life stages.  Although the second ingredient in “Keen” is a grain, organic oats are considered a “quality” grain as opposed to other lower quality “filler” grains.  Keen is a balanced, low-gluten dog food free of fillers or additives.

First Five Ingredients:

The Honest Kitchen “Keen” Dog Food: First Five Ingredients Analysis:

  1. Hormone-free Turkey
  2. Organic Oats
  3. Potatoes
  4. Organic Flaxseed
  5. Carrots

Hormone-free Turkey is the first ingredient, and accounts for the majority of the protein in this food. Turkey is considered a quality meat, and is one of the mainstay foods of a raw food dog diet.  Hormone free turkey contains no antibiotics.

Organic Oats is the second ingredient, and is considered a decent quality grain.  In addition to being high in fiber and contributing to colon health, they can also lower the cholesterol levels in dogs (as in humans).  Oats are also high in protein and are excellent sources of the minerals magnesium, iron and zinc and selenium.

Potato is the third ingredient in “Keen” and provides more complex carbohydrates for your dog.  Although not as nutritionally potent as a sweet potato, white potatoes provide a good source of energy for your dog.

Organic Flaxseed is the fourth ingredient found in the “Keen” formula. It is high in Vitamins A and K, as well as Minerals Magnesium, Manganese and Iron.

Carrot is the fifth ingredient in this food. Carrots

The following daily amounts (DRY quantity) should be adjusted to suit your individual dog’s requirements, which vary according to age, breed and level of daily activity.

Dog’s Weight Amount Per Day (Dry)
Less Active More Active
Up to 10 lbs 1/2 Cup 1 Cup
Up to 30 lbs 1 Cup 2 Cups

As Rick noted, there are no ingredients from China any more. In addition, as part of their Quality Assurance program, they now test for heavy metals and melamine.

I feed both Thrive and Keen and my dogs (two boxers and a beagle) absolutely love it. The beagle is finally ear infection free and the boxers look fabulous – in and out of the show ring.

my 4 Pembroke Welsh Corgis get HK Thrive or Keen every night for their supper. They devour it with incredible gusto, way more than any other food they’ve ever eaten. All have stupendous coats and are in excellent health. My oldest is almost 12 and easily keeps up with his 6 year old grand-nephew. I try to buy HK when I find it on sale, and if you’re diligent you can too ! It’s well worth the extra money….

I would “never” feed any food to my dog, where/when the manufacture “refuses” to give the location to where it is made. I could never trust this company until they came clean as to who and where it is made. Plus it is waaay overpriced,my 105 pound German Shepherd would put me in the poor house eating this.

As far as ingredients go, who knows how much of what/each ingredient is in this food. How can you trust them??? Heck it only has one meat ingredient, so my guess is about 10-12% meat. Plus it is a whole meat, which means it is gonna lose a lot of mass and move at least 3-5 ingredients down the list.

I’ll stick with Orijen and little raw meat, at least then I know he is getting what he should be getting.

This where they get their so called free-range chicken from and if you wait and watch the main page, you’ll soon see the giant chicken coops they use for farming chicken. UNREAL..
