Pedigree Dog Food is made and manufactured by MARS, Inc. Pedigree dog food comes in both a dry version and also a canned version. Pedigree also makes dog treats. You will find 8 different formulas of Pedigree dog food.

As with all dog food recipes the first thing we are going to look at are the first five ingredients. The first five ingredients are a good indication of the quality of the dog food. When looking at the first five ingredients you want to make sure there is plenty of meat and grains are minimal.

PEDIGREE WITH CHICKEN, RICE and VEGETABLES Food Dog Food First Five Ingredients:

  1. Ground Whole Corn
  2. Meat and Bone Meal
  3. Corn Gluten Meal
  4. Chicken By-Products Meal
  5. Animal Fat

Ground Whole Corn is the first ingredient. Some believe that’s dog’s digestive systems have a hard time digesting this ingredient. Corn in excess has also been linked to many cases of dog allergies. Corn is also introduced to this recipe in the form of Corn Gluten Meal as the third ingredient.

Meat and Bone Meal is an ingredient that is also hard to determine the quality of. Meat and Bone Meal is a protein source that is available at a lower cost and used most often by lower quality dog foods.

Chicken By-Products is the third ingredient. This ingredient is impossible to determine the actual quality of. The AAFCO definition of chicken by-product meal is “a meal consisting of the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidable in good processing practice.”

Animal Fat is the fifth ingredient and is an unidentifiable source of fat, therefore making this a lower quality ingredient
