As with all dog food recipes the first thing we are going to look at are the first five ingredients. The first five ingredients are a good indication of the quality of the dog food. When looking at the first five ingredients you want to make sure there is plenty of meat and grains are minimal.

- Ground Whole Corn
- Chicken By-Product Meal
- Rice
- Corn Gluten Meal
- Animal Fat
Ground Whole Corn is the first ingredient. Some believe that’s dog’s digestive systems have a hard time digesting this ingredient. Corn in excess has also been linked to many cases of dog allergies. Corn is also introduced to this recipe in the form of Corn Gluten Meal as the fourth ingredient.
Chicken By-Products is the fifth ingredient. This ingredient is impossible to determine the actual quality of. The AAFCO definition of chicken by-product meal is “a meal consisting of the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidable in good processing practice.”
Rice is the third ingredient and is of a decent quality.
Animal Fat is the fifth ingredient and is an unidentifiable source of fat, therefore making this a lower quality ingredient.

I have a yorkie/chihuahua mix that likes your Small Breed Nutrition dry dog food. I have 3 cats that love it too! I presume the cats won’t have a problem with it as they have not so far , but I just wanted to check. what are the main ingredients in the food as I couldn’t tell fro the bag. Thank ou. M. I need to know what the percentage of fat is in the canned food and the dry food of Pedigree. My dog has come down with pancreatitis and I want to know if I can feed him Pedigree. Thank you
John Neal, I wouldn’t feed a healthy dog Pedigree. Not to mention one that is already sick. You would be better off going to Costco and picking up Kirkland dog food. It is 14 dollars for a 20lb bag.
Pedigree and Beneful, is what I was feeding my last GSD. My vet thought his food was what caused his tumor, which ended up killing him.
