Kirkland Signature Range Chicken, Rice & Vegetable Adult Dog Food Review

For the price it will be hard to find a brand of this quality. Usually dog food brands in the price range of Kirkland are overloaded with grains and fillers. The first thing we are going to do is take a look at the first five ingredients.

Kirkland Signature Range Chicken First Five Ingredient:

  1. Chicken – Chicken is the first ingredient. Since this ingredient is not in the form of a meal it still has its water weight before hand, which if removed it would more than likely fall further down in the ingredients list. Water makes up approximately 80% of this ingredient.
  2. Chicken meal – Chicken meal is probably this formulas first ingredient. Since meat is a natural part of a dogs diet we are pleased to see this as the first ingredient.
  3. Whole grain brown rice – The premium dog food brands will exclude all grains from their ingredients. Does having grains make this food horrible? Not necessarily. Whole grain brown rice is a decent quality of grain so it doesn’t lower the quality of the food that much.
  4. Cracked pearl barley -Also a decent quality grain.
  5. Chicken fat – This is the first fat source meaning for the most part all ingredients before this are going to make up the majority of this food.

Other notable ingredients would include fish meal at the 9th ingredient. We couldn’t find any where on the manufactures website a statement saying they use Ethoxyquin free fish. Ethoxyquin has been linked to cancer in rats and is commonly found in fish aught by commercial boats that cannot be used for human consumption.

Beet pulp is also found as an ingredient and has been linked to allergies in dogs. It comes in the form of a by product.

Opps, I meant to say sugarless. I found Libby’s makes a 100% pure pumpkin. If you use this, store it in a different container and I never store it for more than 3 days. You really don’t need that much… Because Tony well eat it right off the tablespoon, I give him 3 when we get home from the beach and 3 before his meal and 3 after his meal. I usually have to throw some out. 20 Oz is a lot of pumpkin. I always have a can around, Tony likes to eat dead crabs and other nasty things at the beach. The dog has an unreal nose and he gets so far from me I can’t always stop him from eating those nasty things.

Ok, we are getting a standard poodle puppy, 2 years after our poodle niyah , passed away from bloat, I’m thinking about Kirkland chicken and rice, but I was wondering about the grain in it. What really is the % of gain…. In it.

  3. Michelle says:

Brandy, Kirkland is a decent food.I would say mid grade. My dogs have been on the chicken/rice for about 2 months, and are doing well. They really seem to love the taste,as their bowls are always licked clean.

  4. Jess says:

Brandy, whole grain brown rice is WAY better than potatoes, it is the second best ingredient that you can find in a dog food, besides meat of course. Only Oatmeal is better. Anyone who tells you Brown rice is bad for dogs, really has no clue about dogs.
