When look at dog food recipes the first five ingredients are a good indication of the quality of the kibble. The first five ingredients are going to make up the majority of the dog food in most cases.
First Five Ingredients of Iams Active Maturity Large Breed Dog Food:
- Chicken
- Corn Meal
- Chicken By-Products
- Ground Whole Grain Sorghum
- Chicken Fat
Chicken is the first ingredient. This ingredient is inclusive of its water content. Meaning that once the water is removed and the products becomes a dry ingredient it will lose a good portion of its weight, thus making it fall further in the ingredients list.
Corn Meal is the second ingredient. Corn provides your dogs with no nutritional value. Dogs digestive system have a hard time digesting this ingredient. If you feed your dog a corn kernel, you will get a corn kernel out. Corn in excess has also been linked to many case of dog allergies.
The third ingredient Chicken By-Products are basically low quality parts of the Chicken that are rejected form human consumption. We want to avoid this ingredient, unless the manufacture identifies what actually makes up their By-Product ingredients.
The fourth ingredient Sorghum is a decent quality grain.
Chicken Fat is the fifth ingredient and is this foods main source of fat.

Review
This food is absolutely HORRIBLE. Being naive, I purchased what I THOUGHT was a good quality brand name food for my pet that was easy to find. WRONG. Poor Bailey suffered months of allergies, skin problems, and (most notably) ear infections. A bit of research led me to discover that corn causes ALLERGIES and EAR INFECTIONS….geeeeee, surprise surprise. I have since switched her to Natural Balance and have had much much better results for Bailey!
my pets have eaten iams for years and have had hot spots ,itching, and chronic ear infections. i never thought it might be the food. i switched brands and they seem to be getting better. i will NOT use iams again…
I think it might need to be said that just because a pet has problems with a food means its a “bad product”, it just means your pet could not tolerate it, which to me are 2 different subjects. I think IAMS is a good company and puts out a pretty decent product so its not really accurate to say its “horrible dog food” Obviously some dogs react negatively on it>Just like people suffer problems and allergies from foods means that some cannot eat certain foods, it is not indicative of the quality of the product. My 0.02 cents.
Dixie has been eating Iams proactive , and has gone through a skin infection on her back! It was horrible,giving her the antibotics for two weeks ! Will try the Precise dog food , heard it was great for them .
I have a friend that only feeds her dog this and ads canned Pedigree to it. Surprised considering she used to be a breeder(not one of those backyard breeders, but a responsible one) and used to show dogs as well. Thought she would be more aware of how bad corn and unknown by-products are for her dog. She’s fed it for years and apparently doesn’t care to change. Plus, with all the recalls that happened you’d think that would’ve made her more aware. Plus the Pedigree added to it is even worse. I’m in the middle of switching away from Pedigree myself. Horrible stuff. Just gone through tough times and with three dogs had to buy cheap. But, no more. It’s worth the few dollars extra a bag and dollar or so extra a can to have them be healthier.

Holly, my sister had to switch her dog to Natural Balance limited ingredient formula due to her having stomach & intestinal problems. Has really made a difference. No way she could ever give her this Iams stuff. Unlike my friend I mentioned that feeds Iams, my sister knows how bad all that stuff can be for dogs.
