Halo Spots Stew Puppy Wholesome Chicken Dog Food Review

As with all dog food recipes the first thing we are going to look at are the first five ingredients. The first five ingredients are a good indication of the quality of the dog food. When looking at the first five ingredients you want to make sure there is plenty of meat and grains are minimal.

First Five Ingredients:

Halo Spots Stew Puppy Wholesome Chicken Dog Food First Five Ingredients:

  1. Chicken
  2. Whole Dried Eggs
  3. Pea Protein
  4. Oats
  5. Vegetable Broth

Chicken is the first ingredient in this recipe. This ingredient is inclusive of its water content. Meaning that once the water is removed and this ingredients becomes a dried ingredient it will weigh significantly less, thus making it fall further in the ingredients list.

The second ingredient Whole Dried Eggs is going to provide a good portion of this recipes protein. This recipe lacks meat content and it appears that most of the protein is coming from this ingredient.

Pea protien adds to the amount of protein that is already added by the Whole Dried Eggs ingredients.

Oats are going to be this ingredients main source of grains and is of decent quality.

I found Halo Spot’s Stew for puppy contains too much fiber for small breeds. Most brands contain 3-4% fiber at the most but Halo has 6.5%. My puppy had bad runny diarhea and as soon as we switched to another brand (Wellness), his stool was firm and back to normal. I’m sure large breeds can handle the added fiber but unfortunately, my small breed puppy couldn’t.

of course your dog is going to have bad runny stools, that’s because you have to SWITCH THEM OVER CAREFULLY and they will have hard stools. halo is waaaay better than wellness because they have vegetables which are good for puppies and this is by far the best brand of food out today. 10 paws up for halo woo!!!

claire sellers, DOGS OR PUPPIES CAN DO JUST FINE WITHOUT VEGETABLES. Whatever gave you the idea dogs need vegetables? They need meat. Check out your dogs teeth , dogs are carnivores not omnivores. I really don’t think dogs digest much of the vegetables. Halo is a good dog food, but far from the best, that that title belongs to Orijen.

I am trying my puppy out on the Spot’s Stew puppy formula. The size of the kibbe bits is very tiny and the size of the kibble bits does not appeal to my large breed puppy. He likes big sized single better. I’m now mixing canned food with the tiny bits of Spot’s Stew so that he will eat it. He has a softer stool as he’s getting used to his new meal and he gets 3 – 4 smaller meals instead of two big meals, also dry available all day for free snacking. I like the Halo philosophy towards dog nutrition, but would like to see a large breed puppy dry food available with larger bite sizes. Am also wondering what the size of the adult dry food bites are like. If they are also smaller, I may be switching to a brand that has a kibble with large breed pup and dog in mind.
