Default She has eaten a little . . . .LONG, G-d I am SO verbose!

I didn't post this last night because I was too tired-I'm not sure whether this should be under General Dog or Rescue? I want the Frenchie to enjoy her posts so, here goes. Yesterday after a heavy rain- I went out in the car to pick up something from the store. One seldom sees strays in the neighborhood and all that I have ever seen, taken home , fed etc I had usually placed back with the family in no more than a few days , with one exception but that is a story for another time. No, 2 exceptions-one escaped at the beginning of her family's. vacation

A few blocks from my house I spotted a little dog preparing to cross the street - no traffic. Doggie stepped off the curb, then back up. I waited, tooted the horn and waited. . I avoided doggie and drove on, looked in my rearview and saw that doggie had stopped in the middle of the street and was lying there <GROAN>. Got out & walked back to doggie. Cutest little thing-brown with a black flat face & eyes, with black on the ears, long hair rough coat. I picked her up and she was perfectly quiet. yet didn't seem to be afraid, just quiet, oh yes, doggie is a little girl.

One thing about living 20 mi from the ocean, one ALWAYS keeps chairs & clean beach towels in the trunk in case of impromptu picnics :O). I wrapped one around her-- ran my hands through her coat & the fleas were everywhere <BIGGER GROAN>. My vets office is close & I drove there, but it was closed- Saturday 5PM-Duh. Couldn't remember where the emergency clinic was, I wanted to see if she was micro-chipped. I'm angry with the shelter that I used to volunteer with(another long story) so I didn't go there. I stopped and called a friend to find out the addy of the EM. clinic. By now, she was making the cutest little sounds in her throat. My friend commented that she was so quiet- she was out of the towel (I'm itching just thinking of fleas) standing up with her cute little tiny paws on the arm rest looking out of the window-what is that little sound she makes, it is positively endearing? I asked did he want a dog (at the time I was joking-now, I'm not sure) Prepared to go to the clinic.

Next stop, PetsMart. Yea, I know that big S had appeared on my cheat again after years of being in retirement. I bought the spray stuff for fleas & a topical. She was still quiet, I took her home. Apollo (Rottie) stopped dead in his tracks when he realized that I had something live & smelly in my arms. No growl, very quiet. little one was also very quiet. KO (APBT) tail wagging his tail, smiling. I very nicely told both to go to Mama's room. I followed, put a baby gate across my room. They will only go past, rather over that gate if I call. Took the little one into the garage which was once a nice room :O) Turned on the window air unit & nothing. Put her towel & all in a basket & went to prepare.

Ran a nice bath spayed her for fleas (Good Ole Adams)rubbed it into her fur , I couldn't believe how they were dropping off Ewwwwwwwwwww. finally put her in the tub which she did not object to, a tiny little girl in a big tub & in less than a minute the water was a light BLACK.! soaped her with the Murphy's Oil soap. Had to change water & soap her down three times before I got pretty clear water. She is not the brown that I thought. But a light tan fading to cream on her tail& paws ( did I mention how CUTE her little paws are) with black hair sprinkled throughout her coat which is now nice & soft.- very matted fur from about 3/4 of the way down her back to her tail. Matted also behind her ears & down the backs of her rear legs.this too does NOT speak well of her owner hmmmm. Not ever having had any problems with starting a dog on raw-from 10 yrs to puppy, I took a chicken neck, cut it in half & put it down for her. She sniffed then looked at me with those wonderful eyes as if to say "what do I do with this?" , ok, I had some kibble in the car that I keep for strays & put it down-dry, nope! a chicken foot, nope, a sardine-YES! No, I did not do this all at once. I found a piece of marble left over from redecorating 12 yrs ago & that is now her bowl, Found a small water bowl for some puppy. Oh yes, I had taken her collar off-nylon MUCH tighter than I would ever put on my dogs & stiff I cut it off, another Hmmmm.

I have taken her out about 6 times urinated but no Poop. I'm defrosting some ground chuck & will try that. Don't want to give too much until she starts pooping. Oh, I think that she is a Peke, and she weighs 12 lbs. I figured out that the matting & brown stuff were the fleas & their poop.

    Any tips will be appreciated!

She obviously doesn't have an owner right now, who possibly could let a dogs collar get too tight or all those fleas. Maybe she has been lost for a while.

If you really want her to eat, get a can of tripe from a boutique pet store, this is most likely the sure fire way to get some food in her tummy. But you can always hold out and keep up with the chicken neck. Have you checked her teeth? They may be in terrible shape and hurt her.

You are such a great soul for taking in this needy girl.........

i honestly have nothing to offer that you haven't already done.

i would not worry yet about her not eating. i would make sure she drinks...and then offer her chicken again tomorrow...

    does she look underweight?

if she is a peke, looking that scruffy tells me she has not been groomed in a while...

and maybe how long she's been lost or thrown away..

i don't know how long it's been since she has eaten, but maybe feed her tiny pieces of chicken by hand, rather than giving her something she may not have had before...

and then on monday, get her to your vet to make sure she's okay, pick a name for her, and congrats on your new dog :)

Pictures!! We have to see what she looks like all prettied up!

I wouldn't worry too much about the not eating just yet. After all, she's been through a heck of a lot lately. I definitely think you were meant to have one little fuzzy girl in your house. Aren't we all!

I tried the by hand first. She is lean but NOT starved looking. To Dr. F tomorrow. eyes watering-is that normal for a Peke? Ok, I'm taking her off of my lap now, I refuse to obsess over this. She has the cutest way of getting up on her back legs & oatting the iar with her paws. Enough for tonightQ

there's nothing normal about a dog whose hair is matted, is probably scared and has finally found warmth and love in a strange place.

peke's eyes do tear but not all pekes.....so jolie....nice name, btw....has no normal yet.

let's talk about it in a few months when she's bossing your big boys around...and then we'll see :)

She is SO cute. She and KO (APBT) get along great-went through the play bows, sniffing etc. When she sees Apollo she begins to bark furiously. Hmmm that stinker is probably doing something that I 'm not picking up. He hasn't made a sound he seems to ignore her. & she just barks louder. I'm watching him closely, though he has gotten along with little dogs-just not one that mom is carrying around.
She has an appt with the vet for Wednesday-I didn't want anyone but my vet to see her. She had her first Poop this evening. I don't know what she had been eating but was astonished at the size from such a tiny girl. Picked up some canned tripe today & will begin with a clean slate in the AM.
