In my opinion 11 hours is too long for any dog to be left alone, puppy, senior, big or small. Serenity made a great suggestion w/ the dog walker. I myself am a dog walker and cater mostly to business people working 9+ hours a day. If he works 11 hours, I think it would be fair to have a dog walker come 5 hours into the day, walk the dogs for 30-45 minutes and give them some attention for a while. Thats what I do, even if the clients don't pay me enough for it, just because I feel bad for the dog being home alone all day.

I don't think getting two dogs instead of one would better the situation.

As for what breed, I think he should go to the pound and pick out a good big ol' mutt with a big voice!

Standard Poodles can make GREAT guard dogs, but they can also be too friendly. My sister has a couple that are 'alarm' barkers so they keep people at bay. My Cassie was too friendly and would probably act like my golden retriever and help the thieves out with my stuff lol. That being said I agree with the others, that is an awful lot of 'alone' time for a dog. I would maybe try Petfinder to search for a rescue.

Thank you to everyone that has replied. I do agree that Daniel will be away too much but on the other hand I think about dogs that are in rescues, in kennels with very little time outside of it. In a perfect world, where every dog had a loving home and someone to stay with it most of the time I would not even think of Daniel getting one and taking it away from a perfect home but unfortunately, there are thousands of dogs that will never know a loving home and many of those will be euthanized. This is where I get stuck every time.

I've read Daniel everyone's post and for now he has decided to wait, which I think is the right decision. BUT I will play devils advocate here. As I type this another syringe is being filled with pink juice and another perfectly good dog is being put down.

Once again thanks to everyone that replied. .
