Hey Everyone,
I believe I understand everything I've been looking into and reading about the RAW diet. Yet I came across a lot of meal plans, samples & even recipes (not with many visual examples which I do enjoy) My main thing is I haven't seen anything for Puppies. They all mention how for puppies you will be feeding more but I have yet to come across any samples/plans or recipes for puppies. Since my puppy will ba almost 8weeks old it would be nice to see some examples or how i would/could/should be feeding him. If there is any way you guys can help me it would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
SILAS's MoM
There are several people here who raise puppies on raw. Liz is one - here is a cool thread about her puppies:
Puppies eating raw
I haven't raised any puppies, so I won't give advice but I'm sure others will.
I started Keeva in at 10 weeks old the same way that I would an 8 week old.
What breed are you getting?(So that I know what size we are looking at and can somewhat determine the size of cut.)
So you are going to start with 2% of their projected adult weight(unless they weigh less then that number...then it is different) divided into 3 or 4 feedings.
First day between 1/3 and 1/2 of what they would be getting every day with bone heavy bone in chicken(backs or necks, necks for the tiny/small dogs, preferred, but you can do leg quarters or wings-depending on the size of the pup.) TOTALLY skinned and fat removed.
Once stool is good, generally either day 2 or 3. Then go to 1/2-3/4 of their eventual daily amount(still no skin, no fat and same cut of meat.)
Once stool is good on that, probably somewhere between day 3 and 5 move(slowly) to that full amount(the 2% of projected adult weight.)
Once stools are good on bone heavy, skin/fat less chicken for 5-7 days you can slowly start adding back on the skin....leave about half of it on one of the 3-4 feedings for the first day, then if all goes well for at least 2 days leave another half on for a different feeding, then again another 2 days of good stool leave half of the skin on the 3rd meal as well(and other 2 days if you are doing 4 meals.) Then once good on that for 2-3 days add in the other half of one of the meals, and again 2 days and then the next meal, and so forth until they are able to handle all of the skin/fat on all of the meals.
Now you can back off of the bone content(again VERY slowly) you can do this by either adding in a little boneless in place of part of the bone in to one of the meals or slowly making one of the meals a different, less bone heavy cut of chicken(again skin and fat free). (Do it the same way that you did the skin/fat, 2-3 days of solid stools before adding it to the next meal.) Once they are on at least every other meal being boneless(preferable 2-3 meals in a row) you can slowly start adding in a different protein to one of the bone in meals, you will use the same protocol that you did with the skin/fat and the boneless.
That is how I do it(and how I walk the MANY people thru it that I have helped in the past few months)...it is a slow transition, I some times rush a little on a couple of the steps but ONLY when I know the dog/puppy can handle it, but most of the time I go nice and slow...and it works!!(A few times I-or the owner-has had to go even slower then this.....like with Huginn....but those are different cases...and Ive only ever had to do that 2 or maybe 3 times.)

Well I will soon be the proud owner of a great dane puppy, so when it comes to size That should pretty much tell you where I am heading. I really like the extra info. Just wish I could see what it is you are talking about so I can better understand...yet I believe it is basic knowledge type of stuff so I'm sure i can handle it.
thanks,

Ok good we arent talking about something micro then!!![]()
So there are quite a few raw feeding Dane owners, and I know at least DaneMama/JDAtwood and CorgiePaws have raised Danes onto raw from as soon as they have come home...so Im sure there will be more Dane knowledgeable people popping in....but ya....up there is how I would handle it...using backs or leg quarters as my first meals!
EDIT TO ADD:
I can NOT wait to see pictures!!
I ADORE puppies...and Great Danes are just A-DOR-ABLE!!!![]()

Hello and welcome to DFC!
Congratulations on the new Dane puppy! We will definitely demand puppy pictures![]()
We started both of our Dane puppy girls out on chicken wings and drumsticks. I would skin them for the first few days to a week to help prevent diarrhea since skin holds a lot of fat which can be the culprit of causing loose stools. Once they're doing great on chicken wings and drumsticks, I added in boneless meats to their meals in small chunks as long as they handled them just fine. Starting with whole chunks of chicken and turkey working my way up to red meats like beef and pork. After the first few weeks I switched them from wings and drummies to whole chicken quarters and turkey necks. I'd say by the end of the second month both of our girls were 100% transitioned to raw.
I hope this helps and don't hesitate to ask any and all questions! Its the best way to learn![]()
I got my chihuahua when she was 6 weeks old (way too young but she was an urgent rescue) and started her on raw that day. I started with chicken wingettes. I wrapped it in a washcloth then slammed it with a hammer. Her teeth were sooo tiny and that way she could get through the bone. I also fed ground meat. She adapted so easy and went on to chicken necks and livers in no time. Its basically the same as feeding an adult, just smaller portions more often and smaller pieces. More often is important especially for small breed dogs who can suffer hypoglacemia. I would give little bites here and there. I ddnt work at the time so I was with her all day. I got her on to red meat as well in the mattter of a couple weeks. I did, chicken, then turkey, then beef, then pork. Now she eats deer and rabbit too. She's the only puppy I've had since I learned about raw. Sometimes I think people over think the raw feeding. Just keep up the ratio and get into a variety of meats over a gradual time. Its pretty simple really.
My dogs are not spoiled, I am just well trained
Oh geez I didnt read that its a dane puppy, guess you wont need hammered wingettes
And yes we need to see pictures!

Once again -> Thanks Everyone for the awesome helpful advice! I can't wait to finally have him home (less than one week to go) and be able to start him off on Raw. I will definitely post pictures as soon as I can. Mean while I started a page for him on facebook: Silas Dane Says: | Facebook - where he'll be sharing many post/pictures of his adventures where you can keep tabs on him, join his tail* and even share your own. I hope to see you there & here!
Thanks,

I too will be bringing home a Dane puppy in the next couple of weeks, he will be 7 weeks when he comes home. I have been reading everything I can, I started on another forum devoted to Danes, and it brought me here. I think I have the gest of it. I have one other fur baby and of course would like to convert her as well. I am wondering if I can start feeding the puppy just drummies (I think they will be easier to skin), or if wings are necessary for the bone content? Hope to transition to quarters quickly as this is what I plan to start Bailey on, (my 55lb beagle/border collie mix) I will then follow this advice slowly adding new proteins based on stool monitoring. How long should I feed 3x a day? Should I start at the 2-3% of his sire's weight (140lbs) or should I go with 10% of his weight and adjust according to his look? And how is a puppy suppose to "look"? they all look chunky to me?......I think that will do it for my bombardment of questions...for now..Thanks for your help!!
