    Default Egg Shell?

    Hi all
I would like to know if it is good and necessary to feed egg shell?
I feed egg to my dogs but no shell
i read it is not digestable for dogs and it has to be ground into a powder before being fed to dog? or else they can cut up the guts?
    Any advice is very appreciated
    thank you
    regards

The shells can be fed as a source of calcium. I don't feed them because I already feed enough bone, so I'm not sure how to go about actually feeding them. I think they can also help firm the poops, but someone who knows more about it will chime in soon to help you.

Ditto here. I feed bone. Now I have added ground eggshell before when I did ground beef and no bones. If you need a source of calcuim the ground shell is better then store bought in my opioion but you have to remember also that eggs are treated on the outside if not organic.

Since I dont feed the shells I am sure someone can answer better. I am babbaling. :)

I use to regularly feed them as well, as I was aware about their beneficial factor being calcium. As I feed enough bone however, I simply stopped. How I use to feed it was, I simply crushed it into small bits with my bare fingers and sprinkled it onto her food. I would greatly suggest that if you do follow through to give the shells, that they are organic eggs.

They won't cut up your dogs stomach - think of the bones they eat. Eggshells are nothing compared to bones.

An egg with the shell is the perfect ratio of calcium/phosphorus and if dogs will eat the shells on their own alot of people will give them a whole egg and let them break it up themselves and eat everything.

I do feed some eggshell to one of my dogs but she won't eat the shells in large pieces so I have to crush it up and sprinkle it on her food. I do it only because real bones are so constipating for her I can't feed her enough to maintain the calcium level she should have.

I feed the shells to my pup. As much for anything its good fun watching them run around with the whole egg in their mouth trying not to break it :-)

I will say that the shell is clearly visible in the poo so I don't much is digested.

I drop the whole egg in with the meal...shell and all....and let them break it up.

My dogs are too spoilt to break the eggs on their own. So, I drop it in their bowl enough to crack it open so the dogs know that there are goodies in there.

My Dalmatian will eat the white and the yolks first and then chomp down merrily on the shell. The Border Collie on the other hand can't be bothered to eat the shell. She'll eat the whites and the yolk and let the Dalmatian eat the shell. The cool thing is, my Dalmatian regulates the amount of egg shells she eats on her own. If I'm having eggs and I let her clean the shells, she'll eat one or two shells and then walk away from the rest.

I don't like raw egg shards in poop so I grind them up in a coffee grinder < beware it makes VERY fine, lingering dust that I do not like to inhale!! If I'm feeding a meal with bone and happen to include and egg, I don't add any ground shell. But if I'm feeding a boneless meal with an egg, I usually add 3/4 to 1 teaspoon of shell. (my particular dog does not appear to enjoy crunching whole egg shells either)

I feed raw eggs, shell and all, at least 3 times a week. My neighbors have chickens so we get fresh eggs. At first the dogs had no idea what an "egg" was so I broke the egg for them.
