So how bad is tripe? I've fed the cat and ferrets raw for a year but never fed tripe and Jersey is new to raw so she hasn't had any either, but it seems like most do feed this. I had planned on maybe buying some canned, but I've been chatting up a co-worker whose family butchers their own cows, and she said they throw all the "guts" out in the field and there's green stuff oozing out. Which I assume she's talking about tripe. I'm hoping to talk to them about buying organs and meat next butchering season and was kind of wondering if I wanted tripe, how do you go about dealing with it? I've never seen a cows stomachs, but I assume they are pretty big and from the sounds of things, this might be really gross to mess with. Is it something people feed a lot of? I doubt they would charge me for it if they are just tossing it out.
Scoop up that tripe deal! I feed green tripe a few times per week, it's ground and frozen-- my dog LOVES it.
Not sure how you would process it from freshly butchered cows, but maybe they can cut it in chunks for you, or grind it (although I have seen dogs handle a whole fresh stomach.)
By the way, an ex-boyfriend from Sweden swears that his father (who raises and trains working police dogs there) eat primarily "cow stomach"/tripe.
Just know that, yeah--- it does have a pretty strong smell!

How much do you usually feed at a meal? I know the raw supplier here has ground green tripe.

It's stinky but the dogs love it. I buy it in 2 lb chubs and just slice off sections so it's not too bad to deal with. If you have to handle it a lot I'd recommend wearing gloves because it's a little hard to get rid of the smell....![]()

I think you would want them to empty out the stomach for you, and then it would need to be lightly hosed. And then from there...I'm not sure. But I know the gross part is emptying the stomach out.

Hmm, I would be I'd have to do whatever with it, they are probably going to think I'm nuts to even want it, my coworker would probably help, she loves nasty dead stuff, she wanted to be a coroner and takes pics of everything to deal with the butchering, she helped them skin one last year lol. I guess they do chickens too so this might be a great hookup but they don't do the cows until Oct. I'll have to see what all goes on, if it's too nasty I'll just buy some ready to go. Question, what all animals can you get tripe from? I've seen cow, bison and lamb.
They would need to get the lining of the stomach, this is what you want....Don't hose out anything, I made that mistake several years ago when I got fresh lamb tripe....When you get it whole like that you can cut it into bigger chunks and this is the best workout chew for your dogs, great for them and good for the jaw muscles...

Ok while your on the topic, I own half of a steer and he will be slaughtered, so the tripe, isn't it just the intestine, not the stomach? And the stuff in it is good also?
I feed tripe but I buy it in frozen 5lb rolls
But I want the tripe from the steer, he will be finished off on grass
The following is an image from a site, Mcwuff, which sells whole tripe here in Germany.

It weights approx 10Kg (22lb). not sure how it would be prepared but as mentioned I would imagine the contents would be disposed of. All our dogs love it although gloves are worn when handling.
