I have a friend who's dog was just diagnosed with Malabsorption. He is about 20# underweight, and I have been talking to her about Raw for a while now. Has anyone successfully fed a dog with Malabsorption a Raw diet? The Vet of course wants to put him on Eukanuba's Low Residue Diet, which I told her absolutely not. He is a Labrador/Rottie Mix and currently weighs about 60#.
I have no experience with this syndrome, but my logic tells me that raw is the best thing for this....?
Logic would tell me that because raw is the most digestible diet she could possibly provide, that it would be the most beneficial to a dog who has trouble absorbing vitamins and minerals. The nutrients in pmr are obviously the most bioavailable. I would perhaps supplement with something like seameal through the transition...just out of fear that a dog like this might develop a nutritional deficiency faster. All of this is just a guess though.
My cat,Cougar, had a malabsorbtion issue. He was basically starving to death despite eating tons of food. He was severely emaciated. He stools were always straight liquid. We did every diagnostic we could with no answers. He is pretty much impossible to medicate since if he is being treated he hides all day. I switched him to raw about 7 months ago and he is a new cat. he has energy, his hair is growing back and he has perfect stools! He is still thin, but is gradually gaining weight.
