Ha, Mike Rowe does the Ford commercials. What's not to like about Mike Rowe haha! After seeing Dirty Jobs hmmm I'd go with the Ford!
I've seen a look in dogs' eyes, a quickly vanishing look of amazed contempt, and I am convinced that basically dogs think humans are nuts.

.... so, we should buy something because they paid someone famous to say their vehicles are good?

Let's see, we have a 1997 Ford F350 - still going strong... a 1999 Ford Ranger - still going like the energizer bunny... a 2003 Ranger - yup - keeps on ticking... a 2004 Expedition (yes we need all these vehicles, I'm sure)

    And a 1970 Mach 1 Mustang that we've had since 1976...

There are other companies out there???

Oh yeah, I heard they made a chevy in 1957 - but other than that...

I'm not real familiar with the versions of the vehicles sold in the UK but based on reliability and performance, I'll go outside the box and cast a vote for the Mitsubishi L200.

We don't get this truck in the U.S. Until last year Mitsubishi's pick-up offering was called a "Raider", which was a "badge-engineered" Dodge Dakota, a miserable piece of junk if there ever was one.

Mitsubishi mercifully killed the Raider at the end of 2009 and now there is no pick-up offered by them here at all.

I've owned a LOT of cars and trucks over the years, foreign and domestic, but my last three have been Mitsubishi Montero Sports (Challenger in Japan, Shogun Sport in the U.K., Pajero Sport in the rest of Europe, and the Nativa in Latin America) and the L200 is mechanically similar. The Montero Sport was discontinued here in 2004 and we only had the 3.5L petrol engine available (no turbo diesel, which I would kill for).

Anyway, on the plus side, these things are bullet proof and cheap to own. I traded in my 3.0L 1997 when the larger 3.5L engine came out in 1999 and until then the 97 ran flawlessly. The 1999 ended up lasting me over 10 years and 210,000 miles with no major issues when I sold it to buy a used 2003 which is what I drive now. Again, this one has been mechanically flawless, needing only minor work on occasion and normal maintenance. And yes, I drive a lot on and off pavement.

On the minus side, Mitsubishis (at least here in the U.S.) tend to depreciate quickly and they do not offer stellar fuel economy (again, no diesels here). But as far as design, build quality, on and off road manners, off-road capability, reliability and overall cost to own, they can't be beat in my opinion. Oh yeah, my dogs love the Montero Sport too!

I have no idea what I'm going to buy when I wear this one out. Mitsu has replaced it with a ugly, watered-down, yuppie-mobile crossover that I have no interest in. I may have to move into the Toyota camp when that happens but until then, I can't say enough good things about Mitsubishi.

Does VW import a small diesel truck to the UK? I have a Jetta TDI, it's not a truck, but it's a *great* car!!

Unless a particular car or truck that I need to buy doesn't come with a turbodiesel option, I will probably not buy a gas vehicle again. As far as I'm concerned, Diesel Rules!

But the way the US is jumping on the Hyprid bandwagon, a diesel vehicle might be tough to find.

I'd wager that you've heard him in commercials and didn't realize it. He's not just an on screen personality but a HUGE voice guy as well.
