My mom loves her Orecks. She has two. And I have to say, I'm not as fond of them as she is. They're easy to use and all, it's just that they really do not suck up much at all. She vacuums every day so that helps, but still...
I prefer Bissell or Dyson. I wish I could spring for the one Jon just posted because I bet it would help a lot with my allergies. :/

I know I have an unpopular opinion. I think Dyson vacuums are pieces of crap. I will say that compared to Hoover, Dirt Devil, Bissel and the like, it is pretty darn good. But not compared to much better options out there.
We had a Dyson for 5 years. We recently replaced it a few months ago. We maintained the Dyson nicely. Just like we were supposed to. It definitely lost suction over time.
After 5 years, the suction was NOTHING like it was when we first got it.
It didn't do edging well at all or pick pieces of things up. So you have to use the wand here (as well as for stairs, and baseboards and furniture etc.). You end up using the wand about 50% of the time. Which is another beef of mine. That wand was a pain in the butt to use and angle around to use.
My family and I have environmental allergies, so it was important that we switched to a vacuum with a good HEPA filter, a completely sealed unit with no air leaking, and one that used bags that contain dirt and particles. We replaced the Dyson with a Miele Tango upright vacuum after much research. It works very well and I like it much better than the (crappy) Dyson. It cleans MUCH better than the Dyson. You can adjust the suction, so you can vacuum drapes without it being sucked into the wand. It's a completely sealed vacuum and doesn't leak air. It uses a special bag with 3 layers to trap and contain dirt and particles. I don't know how it works on carpet, since we don't have carpet, only hardwood and tile. I do know it adjusts really well from hardwood to area rugs, though.
Is it lightweight?? Umm...no. It's not. But I do know that typically, lightweight vacuums do not work very well.

I have a Rainbow. It weighs a ton, kills my back to vacuum, and I lent it to my brother and his wife at one point - they kept it for a year and while they had it they let their dogs chew through the cord and they broke some things.
So I have electrical tape and a piece of orange extension cord making it functional, pieces duct-taped together where I don't need to un-do them, and constant poking back in of things that keep popping out because one of the snaps is broken.
Plus, it's water based so if you forget and leave the water in after you vacuum - be prepared for the stink. I never knew dirt grows stuff that stinks like that.
Between hauling water and constantly trying to keep the thing stuck together, it's a big pain in the rear. But my Goodness, that thing knows how to suck up dirt.
And no dust in the air at all -between the water and the filter, it's amazing. As long as I can physically haul it around, I'll keep using it.

Yep, I like my Shark Navigator a lot.
I can't get over how quite it is!
Since you have one, I have a question. The crevis tool has a round hole in it where you connect it to the hose wand. How do you connect it where the hole is covered, so it sucks? I mean it sucks still with that on there but not as well and the air goes through and makes a loud sound. I really never use a crevis tool, but I am curious about that.
