    Default Moving to SLC!

I'm moving to Salt Lake City, UT in the middle of this month and I was wondering if any of the members on here were familiar with the area enough to recommend a place where I might be able to get a job working with dogs or animals in general?

I'd love to get something in a dog specialty/boutique shop, doggy daycare, vet clinic, rescue, or shelter, but I don't know of any good ones. And I unfortunately have standards when it comes to vet clinics so if you know of any more natural/holistic veterinarians in the area, that'd be super helpful too!

Which part of Salt Lake City? I'm living in Orem, about 35 miles away, and regularly volunteer at the Murray Shelter about 5-10 miles south of Salt Lake.
That shelter has job openings from time to time, and they're really great down there. (utahhumane.org) They have a Corgi right now that absolutely melts my heart :'(
There's a lot of daycares up in Salt Lake. Unfortunately, none are very good. We get people at the daycare I work at that drive their dogs all the way down to us to avoid others that are closer.
I have yet to find a vet I even remotely like within 60 miles. :'(
They do have a Camp Bow Wow in Salt Lake. They aren't too bad, but they are a big chain. I've worked for them in San Diego and in Boulder, CO. Their corporate office is in Boulder, and it's my understanding the company is totally whacked out now.
Boutiques are few and far between here, and since I work at a daycare that has all that stuff in it I haven't had much experience with any of the others. Love Your Pet Bakery in Park City is pretty neat, though. We do business with them.
Let me know if I can help you with anything. Utah isn't the most dog-friendly or pet-centered place around, but once you kind of get into the mix of things, you find the people who are. I'm in the middle of organizing a dog walk for charity and to get signatured for a petition because there's not a dog park within 30 miles of me!

Well that's just depressing! Sounds like Reno is super pet friendly compared to SLC

Luckily I'm gonna be very close to a really large park where I can take the pups running, and I'll just have to hope they never get sick or hurt since I did some vet searches before asking on here and also found nothing good. Reno has at least 6 dog specialty stores, two great dog daycares, two holistic vets, and 7 dog parks. I actually have no need of these places except for job opportunities (and of course, it's nice to have a vet on my side when it comes to not over-vaccinating and feeding raw food). *sigh*

Yeah, I'm luckily getting out of here in December and moving to Vegas where I have an investor (a.k.a. mother-in-law) waiting to invest in my OWN daycare/ boutique.
Which park are you near? Just be careful about the leash laws, they're really strict about it here. I let my Shepherd run a field at about 11pm thinking no one was around and got threatened with a "citizen's arrest" over it.
What brings you to Utah? It's a beautiful place... but it's not exactly my cup of tea. I'm living with family while I save up money for the wedding and whatnot.

I'm moving there because my bf got an amazing new job there and wants me to come along with him and I could really use the change of scenery. I'm hopefully gonna be near Sugarhouse Park. I didn't get to check it out at all when I was there on Tuesday but I drove by and checked it out on google maps and it looks pretty nice.

Also, is there much of a flea, tick, and heartworm problem in the SLC area? We have pretty much none of that in Reno so I haven't had to worry about it at all but I want to take the proper precautions if that's gonna be a problem when I move.

That makes sense. It's a tough community to "fit into" if that makes sense. That's a nice area though. There are a lot of events at Sugarhouse park, including charity dog walks in the Summer that get pretty big.
Fleas, ticks, and heartworm are NOT a problem here whatsoever. My dogs are on no preventitives at all. We do grooming where I work and we've never even encountered a flea in that department.

That is SO relieving, you have no idea! One less thing I'll need a vet for whew! Yeah, this whole process has been so stressful but hopefully I'll hear back on a house by tomorrow, as soon as that's done, my life will be so much less hectic.
