Ok, I have my eyes set on one of these three in the near future: Nikon D5100, Nikon D3100 and the Canon T2i. What is the difference between the D5100 and 3100? Anything good on Canon?

I'm a Nikon guy all the way! If you can afford the D5100 thats probably what I would get. Overall it's a better camera
Nikon D3100 vs D5100
Can't go wrong with either though

I've never used a Nikon, but have heard good things about them
I have a Canon and love it! It is a low end model and I still am able to take good pictures, which is all I need! lol I do know that my pastor got his wife a Canon T2i for Christmas - she loves it and it takes great pictures without even playing with it!

I have the D5100, I love it! The only thing that I dont love about it is that it has no focus motor, so you have to buy lenses that have an inbuilt-focus motor (they say AF-S, instead of just AF) otherwise you have to manually focus. It didn't seem like an issue before I bought the camera, but now it's only an issue because AF lenses are cheaper than AF-S ones lol. But to get the inbuilt focus motor, I think you have to go up to the D7xxx ones, which cost a fair bit more, so it probably evens out in the end
But I certainly do love the D5100, and recommend it to anyone!

According to my camera class teacher, a professional newspaper photographer, there is always this 'fight' between Canon and Nikon owners. Whenever his photo club photographers get together and go out for a meal, it ends up in huge debates over which is the better brand. So, I think its much of a muchness. I've got a Canon, I love it, the reason I chose a Canon is because my friend had one and I saw the pictures it took and had to have one. But, if she had happened to have a Nikon, then I'd have one of those right now and I bet I would love it just as much. Another friend has a Nikon, very similar model to my Canon, and they are very very similar in price, and all round quality, plus photo's clarity are very similar too.
Good luck choosing, you can't go wrong though, both are great brands and great camera's.
If I was starting over again, I would put my money into the absolute best quality lenses I could afford and not worry so much about the body of the camera. Camera bodies can be replaced, but the lenses, good ones, should last just about for life if looked after properly.

I use a D3100 and I love it. I'm a noob when it comes to cameras, so I'm still figuring it out, but all in all... I really enjoy it.
The only major difference between the two that is worth discussing IMHO is how they feel in your hand. I have found that the cannon is great for small hand but the Nikon is not quite so good. As MollyWoppy has pointed out a lot of the quality comes down to the lens not the body.
If you can get you hands on them one should feel better :-) (I am still saving for the Nikon)
I just went thru this debate before Christmas...Nikon vs Canon. I spoke with a lot of professional photographers and friends concening which "one". They all stated you could not go wrong with either choice that it was mostly a matter of preference. One professional photographer told me the best thing you could do was hold each one in your hand and that would be the most important part..."the feel". So, I took her advise and went and did just that. Now, I was leaning towards Nikon beforehand but let me tell you that was end of story. The Canon was much more solid and fit my hand like a glove. I couldn't believe how different the feel was and completely understood what she meant. We have Mac and Sony Vaio laptops along wih other Apple products...the best analogy I have is Canon is like an Apple. It's like holding a PC laptop then holding an Apple...anyone having owned these two products understand...total different construction and build. Now, this was comparing the Nikon D7000 to the Canon 7D. So, needless to say, one of my Christmas presents from my boyfriend was the Canon 7D. One word...LOVE!
ETA: I had to edit where I previously wrote Apple instead of Mac and was told I'm not with "it", LOL. I use the Sony Vaio most of the time...so...guess, I'm not.
