For the water pic I just used my Nikon's "Sports" setting and shot about 20 pics...
Best "class" I can recommend is Exposure Lessons, in order « Stop Shooting Auto!

Well, what a first experience...def can't tell...they're great. I have no clue what I'm doing...it's like going from 5th grade science class to "surprise surprise" welcome to chemistry class. By the way, I hated chemistry...oh lawd, please tell me this is going to go well, LOL.
Good job on the water pic, AWESOME!!! What setting and lens did you use on night time pic of Akasha...another fab pic?
THANK YOU so much for the link...have so many I've been reading/watching...maybe this one will be best.
All I can say is keep shooting and keep playing with settings. Thankfully with digital we can learn quickly without burning through real film.
Do you have an external flash? Not sure how I'd live without mine (the built in flashes just don't cut it since you can't aim them away from the subject)
The night shot of Akasha was with my kit lens (AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm) using the external flash (The simple SB-400 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...SIN=B000KKPN5C) aimed at the ceiling. Most likely I used the Programmed Auto setting since I'm still not 100% comfortable shooting full manual.

True dat...I would be burning fiercely thru some film.
No, external flash yet...Christmas received camera straps, carrying cases/bags, extra batteries, etc etc...
I'm looking at flashes along with tri pods and more glass...decisions decisios decisions...looks like camera goodies from now on.
I tried full manual yesterday and got some good shots but not any I wanted to save. Well kinda glad to hear you're using program setting...I don't feel like an idiot then for not catching on right away. How long have you been using your current camera?
I've had my D3100 a little over a year now. I got even luckier with pics the night I got my D3100

Although I did "throw away" close to 400 pics from that night trying to find the right settings LOL I was up til 3am in 6 degree weather waiting for those shots (wasn't even dressed right for it LOL)

OMFG...those need to be put into print...like magazine print!!! Do you have them hanging on your wall...if not...you seriously need to display those?! Blew me away. So, is it possible for me ever to do something so amazing with my Canon??? You've got me second guessing my choice of camera, lawd.
ETA: Also, what lens were you using in those pics? Can you possibly recall the settings? I'm having picture envy!

Awesome...thanks! Those will look great on canvas and hanging proud.
I have a few questions after viewing many photos on Canon and Nikon FB pages along with one's you shared and a friend whose a pro Nikon user. It seems Nikon pics are more vivid and show very strong detail. I wonder is this in result of camera type or more the operator and/or software. There were not an abundance of 7D shots to view mostly rebels but a few were impressive. I noticed many were flat. I didn't see this as much on Nikon's page...more strikingly bright. It has me concerned if I made the right choice...have 45 days to return leaving about 15 remaining.

The bold is very important.. I'm not saying you are like this, but SO many people get DSLR's and assume they should automatically be a "photographer" and have amazing pictures. NOT the case. Jon's pictures are awesome because he has a great eye for a good shot, and yes, the camera helps a bit ;) Also, don't forget that a lot of pictures you'll see that are "super sharp & bright" have been edited to make them that way, they generally don't come straight off the camera like that.
Here are a couple from my Canon (T1i) that I'd consider pretty detailed and vibrant (granted, I only take pictures of pets, so there's only but so much detail you can get haha):
None of these are heavily edited either.

Oh my goodness...in NO way do I think I'm a photographer or should be taking amazing pics right away...WISH I was that good. I've got a LONG way to go to learn this baby...Canon 7D.
Maybe a lot of amateurs post to Canon without any kind of editing. I have to say...some of these Nikon pics blow me away...such intense coloring and unblievable detail...very impressive.
Kady, you do take great pics of your dogs but these Nikon landscape and macro pics I've seen...amazing.
