So this morning I am out walking my dogs and this shitzu comes racing out in the middle of the street and almost gets hit. It kept following me and running out on the street. I picked up the dog afraid of him getting hit by a car. I took the dog to my work I am a dog groomer on my day off call animal control and they came got the dog, he had no tags. I go home get a call from a co worker saying a 90 year old man came in saying his neighbor saw that girl from work (me) take his dog. Anyway he came in store and my coworker told the owner were he could pick up the dog and he would have to pay a $150.00 fine. Know I am the one that looks bad, neigbors think I stold this mans dog and the man is in tears saying he lost his wife and all he has is his dog. If the neighbors saw me take the dog why wouldnt they come out and let me no where the dog lives. I couldnt take the dog home with me he wasnt fixed and really loud and I live in a apartment. Know I feel like crap. I thought I was doing a good thing.

You did the right thing, if you left the dog it would have been hit by a car. The dog should be fixed as well.
I agree, what were you supposed to do, skip work and go knocking door to door? If he was so worried about the dog, it shouldn't be running loose, much less with no tags or anything. Honestly that's one thing that annoys me around here is the cops won't do their job and pick up loose dogs unless they are a "nuisance" or attacking someone so the same idiots let their dogs run loose all the time, if they had to pay a fine and get their dog they might keep them contained better.
You definitely did the right thing! I'm sure everyone would be much more upset had the dog been hit and killed.
Something similar happened to me, only I work for animal control! A dog that lives down the street (I didn't know this at the time, I'd never seen him before) was out wandering around pretty far down the street from where he lives. It was getting dark and I was afraid he'd get hit, as my street is very busy, so I coaxed him over, put a leash on him and brought him to my shelter. The next day his owner called, and my boss told him that it was an AC employee who found his dog roaming. Instead of being thankful that I potentially prevented his dog from being killed, he accused me of stealing the dog off his property! I couldn't believe it.
RAW FED SINCE AUGUST 2010
You definitely did the right thing! Hopefully he learns to keep his dog leashed!
Incidentally I currently have a vistor whose owners I'm trying to find...
Oh that's ridiculous!
Did he have a phone number on a tag? apparently not.
Was he being negligent in letting the dog get out? Apparently so.
Would he have felt alot worse having to scrape his dog off the street? Let's hope the answer to that is that it's worth $150 not to have to do that.
Don't feel bad. It's HIS fault, not yours.
Put it this way, if Mollie got out, I didn't notice for a few hours (ha ha) she had no tags on and ran up up a main road with all the traffic and someone picked her up and took her to animal control, well, I'd be kissing their feet with gratitude.
You did the right thing, don't second guess yourself or feel guilty, it's so much easier for this gentleman to put the blame on you than to take a damn good look at himself and admit maybe he should be taking better care of this pup especially if it does really mean that much to him.

apparentlly the man let out the dog and went to put him on the tie out and the dog darted off to the neighbors to visit there dog the owner went back in the house thinking the dog would come back on his own. I feel bad because the man is 90 doesnt drive, doesnt have much money and he has to pick up his dog which is half hour drive and pay $150.00. The man lives around the corner from me. I am already having problems fitting in my street because of people not being dog lovers only cat, now people will think I took his dog. My co worker says I should have gone knocking on doors asking if they were missing a dog. I am very nervous around people couldnt do that even if I wanted to. Anyway not much I can do know just hope the man gets his dog back. I would drive him only I dont drive myself. I am going to be up all night thinking if he got his dog back.
He just waited for his dog to return? He lets the dog go visit the neighbor all by himself?
We've knocked on doors before. it takes forever, half the people aren't home or they're not answering, the other half are ticked off you bothered them, and the chances of finding the owner aren't very high.
I'm very sorry he lost his dog. It's sad that he is old, doesn't have a car, doesn't have money, etc etc etc. But he was the one who let his dog off a leash to run over to the neighbor's house, and then wants to blame someone else when it didn't come home like he planned.
Irresponsible people will look for ways to blame someone other than themselves. You'll probably always be the bad guy in this. But you likely saved the dog from getting killed.
