Default Anyone else ever have a bone spur surgery?

EEEK! SO back in 2005 before I got married I went to the Podiatrist to have my pinky toe checked on my left foot as it was always building up callouses, well my toe nail was also split so he removed the toenail and it wasn't supposed to grow back, well it did and in May of this year. I went to my regular Dr who removed the toe nail and killed the nail bed....well it's still hurting and I am still growing callouses and it hurts to even wear shoes.....so I went to a different Podiatrist today, and he was awesome! Looked at my toe asked me if anyone had ever taken an xray of my foot, answer was no, and he took xrays well apparently I am missing the 3rd bone in my 5th/pinky toe so I have developed a bone spur on the bone there......so I have to go to the hospital for surgery on November 10th.....and miss 3 days of work (which I can't afford) but we just got Aflac, so that will pay me back for part of the missed time....YAY!

I am scared to death to have surgery, haven't been 'under' anesthesia for 16+ years when I had my wisdom teeth out way back when....and I super hyperventilated when waking up. I panic easy. Has anyone ever had this done? Is it really painful recovery? He said I have to be off my feet for a few days, so it doesn't swell and should be able to go back to work on that following monday, but will have stitches. I was very amazed with their office, very friendly, offered me a 'snack' while I waited for the Dr whom even though was short staffed today and heading out to speak at a conference, didn't keep me waiting very long. MUCH MUCH Better than the last Podiatrist I saw.

if you're getting general anaesthesia....tell the anaesthesiologist.....that you wake up rough...they can control that.

no surgery is painless...some more than others....and it's , i think, the only body part i haven't yet been operated on...but you will get better....

my friend had bone spurs and i won't lie to you....it hurt like hell for the first few days and then it got better....lattes and ice cream helped a lot.

that and steady doses of pain meds.

i'm sorry this is happening to you....i really am....but if you do it, you'll feel better for having done it.

I am not very tolerant of most pain meds either so that is a concern too. Codeine/Hydrocodone makes me sicker than heck. So I'm hoping all will go well. I'm also sensitive to Iodine so it's gonna be a fun visit lol. It has been hurting me so badly that I can hardly stand to wear shoes, half the time at work I take my shoe off because it hurts so bad, and it's been like this off and on for years so I'm hoping it will bring relief once the initial healing happens.

I had bone spurs removed from both of my "pinky toes" many years ago. He performed the operation in his office clinic & I was given a local. The worst thing was the d%&#@d inconvenience trying to stay clean while not allowing the feet to get wet. Also after a few days the bandages have a certain odor <phew>. Never had another problem with my feet & it is important to stay off of them for the first few days-if those are his orders.

My ex had the same surgery-did NOT follow orders, went to work-where he had to stand on his feet (dummy) and ended up having to repeat the procedure on one toe and had even more bone removed. You'll be ok-get a drug that agrees with you and sleep for a day of two <LOL>

Aren't sick days covered in the U.S? Here I think we have 18 days by law that's paid by employers. If you're out two days or more a doctors note is required to prove illness, or time off for surgeries.

At least now you can have your discomfort addressed properly. Take care of yourself after surgery

i cannot take pain meds either. they make me sick...although i can take demerol which hospitals no longer give. something about addicts and seizures, as if other pain meds are any better...bah..

but. if you cannot take pain meds, ask for lorazepam or diazepam (ativan or valium). tell him you're very anxious....at the very least, it will keep you calm and maybe help you sleep. you can take tylenol or aspirin, which he'll tell you not to take because you'll bleed out all over the place...and motrin...and he'll tell you the same thing...at which time you ask for a blod clot test and say, what would you have me do? and then cry. docs hate when patients cry...:)

i think what i'm trying to say is tell them everything you've said here...about pain meds, because they routinely give vicodin or percocet or even oxy....and all of them will make you throw up or be sick if codeine meds make you sick.

there is a new anti vomit drug on the market....it's wonderful...it's called..Zofran and it's oral melt in your mouth drug. so if you do take the pain meds....this will keep you from throwing up. the other way to keep from throwing up is break the pills in half and take half doses....and take them every two to three hours, instead of every 4-6 hours, depending on what they tell you. it's less for your body to have to deal with and less more often actually controls pain better....

or tough it out....you can always smoke some weed :)

tell them you're sensitive to iodine. they need to know that...

i wish you the best. this is not an agonising surgery....but it's uncomfortable....at least the first day or two....from what i understand...and it also depends on how extensive the surgery is....

i just think if you take as much control as you can and be your own advocate and tell the docs everything you've said here about anaesthesia, and iodine and pain meds....you're looking out for you....and that's as it should be.

i think it varies....my husband has unlimited sick days, but he, too, would probably have to produce a doctor's note after the second or third day.

I've never had that kind of surgery, so I can't offer anything but my best thaughts. Just be sure the doctor is aware of all your pain med sensitivity, how you wake up etc... They should be aware of it from the doctors files, but I would tell them as well. You will be just fine, we are thinking about you!
