    Default Performance Foods

My freezer died and the dogs are having to eat kibble until I get another freezer and go back to raw.

I was feeding Orijen 6 fish, but the price went up and several of my dogs has issues on it. So we fed Earthborn grain free for a while and dogs did ok on it. Ran out of food and since I have to order it, I just picked up a bag of TOTW Pacific Stream Puppy since my dogs normally do pretty well on fish food and the small dogs like the smaller pieces.

Everyone seems to be doing ok except my Greyhounds. They dropped too much weight despite increasing feeding amounts.

I am currently trying Native Level 3 Puppy food and they seem to be doing good on it so far. But was wondering if anyone else has any suggestions that I may have not looked at.

They have no food sensitivities. Very active, one is a puppy. Can eat about anything, doesn't have to be grain free. I do add eggs, liver, cottage cheese, yogurt, can tripe, etc. to their diet. I just need a high protein high fat, high calorie food that is reasonable priced since I'm feeding 8 dogs.

Riddick is getting 4 cups of Native plus 1 cup of extras. Ronon is eating 3 cups plus 1 cup of extras.

I would suggest one of the Innova EVO foods. My older GSP was on "Brand X" and as a youngster couldn't keep weight on even at 4 cups of food a day. After we switched him to EVO Turkey/Chicken he put on muscle, his coat became shinier, and he seemed to have even better stamina/energy out in the field.

Plus of course you wind up feeding LESS of a better quality food. As I mentioned, at the time we switched him from "Brand X" he was on 4 cups; EVO was a little over 2 cups/day.

As for the puppy, we've had him on that food ever since we selected him @ the breeders. They had him for a couple of weeks while we were traveling, so by the time we picked him up on the way home, he was already well transitioned from their stuff to the EVO.

Thanks. I have fed Evo before. The dogs did ok, but not good enough to justify the price and they always seemed very hungry on it to the point they started trying to steal food off the counter. Never did it on any other food and stopped as soon as we switched foods.

aw, just give them the food off the counter then, LOL

good luck with your search. I tried orijen before the evo and the orijen just didn't work, Roxy lost her hair so something in there didn't agree with her, so there is some trial and error.

I used royal canin before that.

    I wish you the best.

The same thing happened to me when we tried Orijen! I wonder what was in it? My Ava's stools were also very loose but everyone kept saying to give it a month, then her fur fell out. Maybe it's something about Weims!

yup, it took the EVO to get her coat back to full again.

Orijen is a good food, just not for Roxy or weims it looks like

Give the EVO a try, the coat they get when they are on it is amazing. Just be carefull not to overfeed.

If they get loose, reduce,!!!, LOL

Keep in mind that its easy to overfeed on high protein foods which can result in diarrhea. I only fed like a cup of Orijen to my 60 lb weim to maintain current weight and he wasnt too happy with the amount, so I switched to acana grain free and he did a whole lot better, he ate about 1 3/4 cup a day. But he's not a very active dog to begin with, so it may have been an overkill with orijen.

Another food to look into is petcurean go fit+free, its their new grain free line which has moderate protein levels and comparable to acana (also made in canada)

For more affordable options you can check out nutrisource grain free or natures logic(not GF but decent meat content and low glycemic)
