Default Low Protein for old Pom mix

I have just found out that my 15 year old Pom mix is in Kidney failure, the vet
has recommended a low protein food for him (we are doing the sub-q fluids here
at home) we bought some of the Medi-Cal low protein canned food from the vet and he likes it for now but I know that won't last, I am just wondering if you could give me some ideas for a low protein homemade diet for him. If not the vet does have some recipes in the office that she can copy for me (she is also a raw feeder so that helps)

    Thank you in advance

Raw is definitely the way to go. Lew Olson has a book called "Raw and Natural Nutrition for Dogs" that has a host of recipes for dogs suffering with kidney problems that I'm sure you'll find helpful. Good luck.

Raw meats are actually lower in protein than most commercially made foods. Depending on the meats they contain anywhere from 18-26% protein. Not to mention the proteins in raw meats are appropriate and bioavailable to your dog more so than kibble.

I hope you find something that works for your little guy, don't hesitate to ask any and all questions!

Sorry to hear this about your pom.

I feed my 2 poms raw - I know small breeds can be a bit finicky - I know one of mine is. They love turkey, chicken and pork sometimes I sear their organs if they get a bit blah on them. I do trim down their foods a bit but I don't for my larger breeds. Maybe this will work for yours. Are you doing supplements of any kind?

Hopefully you find a mix to help out.
