As with all dog food recipes the first thing we are going to look at are the first five ingredients. The first five ingredients are a good indication of the quality of the dog food. When looking at the first five ingredients you want to make sure there is plenty of meat and grains are minimal.

- Chicken
- Chicken Meal
- Cracked Pearled Barley
- Whole Grain Brown Rice
- Oatmeal
Chicken is the first ingredient in this recipe. This ingredient is inclusive of its water content. Meaning that once the water is removed and this ingredients becomes a dried ingredient it will weigh significantly less, thus making it fall further in the ingredients list.
Chicken Meal is the second ingredient and is a named meat ingredient. A dog’s diet needs to based on the fact that dogs need meat and protein that derives from meat.
Cracked Pearled Barley is the third ingredient. Barley is a decent quality grain. If there are grains we would prefer to see this grain over others.
Brown Rice is the fourth ingredient and is a decent quality grain that adds additional protein and carbohydrates to your dog’s food.
Oatmeal is the first ingredient and is a decent quality ingredient. If your dog has allergies to Oatmeal Gluten one should avoid this ingredient.

We have two labrador retrievers, a 4 1/2 year-old chocolate lab and a 10 months old black lab. The Vet told us to feed both dogs with the same food (Exclusive Chicken and Rice Large Breed Puppy Dog Food) because the dogs were eating each others food and the puppy really needs to get all the nutrients from the puppy food. So we have been feeding them both with Exclusive Chicken and Rice Large Breed Puppy Dog Food, which great results. Our chocolate lab used to have seizures, since we change to Exclusive he hasn’t had any seizures. We think it could be the omega oils that these food has. This month we will change to Exclusive Lamb & Rice Adult Formula. We were not sure to choose this one or the Chicken & Rice Adult Formula, but the Lamb & Rice Formula has no corn and has better rating.

Can you buy this anywhere in the store on the west coast?
You can buy Exclusive Dog Food at feed and grain stores if you know what I mean. You might have to go to a ‘family owned’ one though. A good one.
