Eukanuba Adult Maintenance Dog Food Review

As with all dog food recipes the first thing we are going to look at are the first five ingredients. The first five ingredients are a good indication of the quality of the dog food. When looking at the first five ingredients you want to make sure there is plenty of meat and grains are minimal.

Eukanuba Adult Maintenance Dog Food First Five Ingredients:

  1. Chicken
  2. Chicken By-Products
  3. Corn Meal
  4. Ground Whole Grain Sorghum
  5. Ground Whole Grain Barley

Chicken is the first ingredient in this recipe. This ingredient is inclusive of its water content. Meaning that once the water is removed and this ingredients becomes a dried ingredient it will weigh significantly less, thus making it fall further in the ingredients list.

Chicken By-Products are the second ingredient. This ingredient is impossible to determine the actual quality of. The AAFCO definition of chicken by-product meal is “a meal consisting of the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidable in good processing practice.”

Corn Meal is the third ingredient. Some believe that’s dog’s digestive systems have a hard time digesting this ingredient. Corn in excess has also been linked to many cases of dog allergies.

Sorghum, the fourth ingredient is of lower quality and is primarily a filler that offers an additional source of carbohydrates.

Barley is the fifth ingredient and is of decent quality.

I have been feeding Eukanuba to my Boxer for years and guess how old he is? 12 years old and in great shape. And I also have a 2 year old Boxer also. I can’t believe the low ratings on this food. We have used Eukanuba dry and wet for all of our dogs. I know the Eukanuba Boxer dry food is no great deal and is very expensive and I don’t see the difference between the two besides the price, 41 for the Adult Maintenance and 50+ for the Boxer formula. I think the breed specific dog food is just a marketing tool so you think you’re getting the best food for your breed of dog, they know people will spend any amount of money on their dogs. But it’s not just the food that helps in longevity in your dogs it’s #1 Love, exercise, diet and regular visits to a good Vet.
