Eagle Pack Dog Food and Eagle Pack Holistic Select Dog Food Formula

Eagle Pack is manufactured by Eagle Pack Pet Foods, Inc., a company known to produce holistic pet food formulas since the 1980’s.  Eagle Pack is well known for replacing common filler ingredients with high protein meat ingredients without the use of artificial preservatives and come up with a dog food formula perfect for providing quality nutrition to dogs of all breeds, ages and performance level.

Eagle Pack has nine dry dog food formulas in the market, all of which have met the AAFCO standards for different life stages—two for puppies, six for adult dogs, and one senior dog formula.

The Eagle Pack dog food rations are protein-rich formulas with fresh meat and meat meals as the main sources of meat-based protein.  Eagle Pack claims that the meat which they use are hormone and antibiotic-free.

The protein component of the Eagle Pack dog food formulas are derived from two or more of the following sources—chicken meal, anchovy and sardine meal, pork meal, lamb meal, lamb, turkey, chicken, and beef.

Chicken liver, beef liver, lamb liver, and dried egg product are also added to increase the biological value of protein.

Fresh meat sources are highly desirable but one major disadvantage of using them as dog food ingredients is their high water content (about 80%). Water is lost during processing leaving only a fraction of the original amount. On the other hand, the addition of meat meals is a means of increasing the protein value of the dog food ration. Meat meals such as lamb meal, chicken meal, anchovy and sardine meal, and pork meal are considered meat concentrates containing more than 300 % of protein.

It is good that Eagle Pack identified the specific sources of these meat meals because there are many dog food brands that indicate only generic meat meals that trigger the question on their possible sources. Many generic meat meals are made from parts of slaughtered food animals or fish which have been deemed unfit for human consumption.

Aside from being a good source of high quality protein, liver is also a rich source of all essential minerals, water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins which are needed by the body.

The carbohydrate component of the Eagle Pack rations are sourced from ground yellow corn, oatmeal, dried beet pulp, ground brown rice, ground white rice, wheat germ meal, brown rice, oatmeal, oat fiber, corn gluten meal, barley (ground or pearled), and flaxseed (linseed).

Although many of these carbohydrate sources are wholesome and desirable, there are a few which have been given the red flag such as corn, dried beet pulp, and wheat germ meal.

Corn is considered by many dog owners as a potential dog food allergen. Dried beet pulp, which is a by-product of sugar beet processing, contains high amounts of fiber but it is considered as an inexpensive dog food filler which contradicts Eagle Pack’s claim of not using any filler. Wheat germ meal contains at least 25% protein but it is a plant-based protein.

Probiotics are added to enhance the digestion process and boost immune functions.

Chelated minerals are also added to ensure better absorption.

Although many dog owners have come up with positive reviews on Eagle Pack dog food products, there are also negative reviews which have been voiced out including poodles which are hypersensitive to beet pulp and allergic reactions which have been linked to corn.  Many dog owners are also decrying the change in some Eagle Pack formulas which has been linked to problems in dogs with sensitive digestive systems.

We recommend Eagle Pack dog food brand and believe that they produce quality formulas with moderate-to-high protein content.

I am using Eagle Pack Holistic Select dry (Anchovy, Lamb, Senior, Duck) and EPHS can (chicken, lamb, tuna, beef) for my 3 dogs. They are doing fantastic on this food! Very healthy with nice coats, nice breath, firm stools, etc. I will continue to use this product. My dogs love it and so do I!

I have had to switch to this brand on the recommendation of a dog trainer. My dog suffered soft and runny stools, I used Science diet before. I use the Holistic Lamb Meal & Rice + Chicken formula, so far I have noticed firm stools, Nice Shiny coats and lots of energy.I usually add lots of Chicken to the food as well. My German Shepherd Dog can tolerate this brand better than most of what we have tried so far.

I am a Rottweiler breeder as well as an owner of 2 other dogs who are mutts, I have been using the Eagle Pack Holistic Select Large breed Puppy and Adult foods since my first litter and every pup has never had anything since. So far no health issues and the dogs are gorgeous, great coat and good muscle structure and bone development was slower so less chances of hip problems. Every time we go to the vets my vet just keeps telling me to keep doing what im doing!! I would highly recommend this food to anyone willing to try it!!

I have just found this food at a local pet center. I am planning on switching my dogs to this food completely. This is based on that fact that it has cranberry powder mixed with wet and dry versions. It helps with the PH levels and I wanted to switch for my Shih Tzu who has bladder stone problems.

Are there any suggestions from people with small dogs? How do you like the food?

I have two Cairn Terriers I was feeding them canidae dry dog food but when they changed their formula it caused my dogs to have very soft stools and diarrhea. Other cairn terrier owners recommended this brand. Currently I mix small & mini breed dry dog food with Chicken and rice dry dog food. My dogs absolutely LOVE this food. My female cairn is extremely picky and she really like the small breed dog food.

My 1.5 yr old Standard Parti-Poodle loves Eagle Pack Power Formula, however I have tried many other flavors for my Malti-Poo and his digestive system didn’t seem to agree. Overall it’s a great brand of dog food.

I switched my two dogs over to Eagle pak last year and it did them better than Eukanuba, however, after not quite a year on that same food they passed away within 3 months of eachother….i was looking to see if anyone has found any health issues with this food or if perhaps what we had was coincidental deaths.

I am absolutely going out of my mind. One of my dogs is in intensive care at the Lort Smith Hospital. he has acute liver problems and a very high fever.

I have three minature schnauzers and they used to eat eagle pack and we were very happy then it was impossible to get it.We were happy when it came back into store. This time they don’t like it. THE PACKAGING IS DIFFERENT THE BISCUITS ARE DIFFERENT. I have just found out on the internet that the company has changed hands and I have been reading several dog owners concerns that they are associating the deaths of their dogs with the same eagle pack product I have been forcing my dogs to eat. Please if any one else is having problem s speak out because to loose something precious like my little Ziggy I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

I was feeding my German Shepherd Lana Holistic Eagle dry food for 3,5 years. She was doing great until now. She refuses to eat it. I thought she wasn’t feeling well until I gave her Fromm Dry Food and it was gone in 1 minute!!!
I am not buying Holistic Select anymore. I am sticking with Fromm Dry Food .My dog loves it, less poop and great energy!

My 2 dogs and 2 cats are thriving and I have never seen them look better than when they started on the Holisitc Select Duck formula (dog and cat versions). I love this food as it aligns to what I believe in, natural, balanced, great food – why are there so many other foods that are at the same price so full of crap that has no benefit but I pay the same. Why do poeple get sucked in by marketing and not read the ingredients and benefits of product. I am a big Eagle Pack and Holisitc Select fan.

    Janice,

Keep an eye on your ingredients list on Eagle Pack and Holistic Select on future bags. The company is now owned by WellPet, who lately seem more interested in the dollar than the dog.

I have used Holistic Select (large breed) for 2 years. My Golden Retreiver,4 yrs old and Lab 8 yrs old love it. Their coats and eyes sparkle! They don’t shed nearly as heavily on this food as on other premium foods I have fed them in the past. I agree with Janice, I,too, am concerned that the ingredients will change since Eagle Pack has been sold to another company. If that happens, they will lose me as a customer!

I’ve just started my 1.5yr old Golden on Eagle Holistic (Lamb Meal & Rice) for Adult dogs. He’s getting soft runny stools. Not sure if he’ll improve over time. I never had any problems with cooked meals (brown rice, beef, chicken, fish, veg) and occasional half apple. Any advice?
