Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul Dog Food
Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul is a premium dog food line whose individual formulas are designed to meet the varying nutritional needs of different life stages. It is manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods, the pet food division of Schell and Kampter, Inc. with headquarters in Missouri. Four of its dog food formulas are certified to have met the AAFCO nutrient profiles for adult maintenance; its puppy formula satisfies the nutrient profiles for all life stages, while the Large Breed Puppy formula meets the nutrient requirement for growth.
There are seven Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul dog food formulas which are available in the market.
No Chicken Soup dog food formula has been subject to pet food recalls. However, the company voluntarily recalled 19 products in 23 states after it was discovered that their manufacturing facility in South Carolina tested positive to aflatoxin.
The major ingredients of the different formulas include chicken, turkey, chicken meal, turkey meal, and grains (whole grain brown rice, white rice, oatmeal, millet, and cracked pearled barley). Most of the Chicken Soup dog food formulas contain two raw meat ingredients and two meat meals in an effort to ensure that the protein component of the dog food is adequate to meet the dog’s daily needs.
Raw meat sources are wholesome ingredients that contribute to the overall protein component of the diet however fresh meat sources contain more than 80% water. Upon processing, water evaporates from the meat, leaving only a fraction of the original weight, which means that there is also a consequent decrease in the amount of protein component in the diet.
Chicken meal and turkey meal are considered meat concentrates, so called because of their high protein content. Meat concentrates contain almost 300% more protein than raw meat sources. The disadvantage of concentrate meals is the questionable sources of ingredients. Most of these are from meat parts which have been deemed unfit for human consumption such as beaks, feet, and entrails.
Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul dog food formulas also contain a considerable amount of whole grains characterized with low hyperglycemic indices. This characteristic is very important in maintaining the stability of blood sugar levels of dogs.
Oatmeal is made from coarsely ground oats. Unlike the majority of whole grains, oatmeal is gluten free, making it suitable for hypersensitive dogs. It is also a natural source of B-vitamins and fiber which is very important in the digestive process and elimination.
Millet is another gluten-free grain which is a product of certain species of grass. Being gluten-free, it is a hypoallergenic ingredient which is also rich in digestible fiber and B-vitamins.
Brown rice is an easily digestible complex carbohydrate. Compared to white rice, it is more nutritious because the nutrient-rich outer layer of brown rice has not been removed.
There are Chicken Soup formulas which contain ocean fish meal. Although it is a protein concentrate, it may raise some reservations because there is no mention of the species of fish from which it was derived.
Chicken fat is rich in linoleic acid, an important omega-6 fatty acid. It is a by-product derived from chicken rendering.
Probiotics or beneficial bacteria have been added as coating of the kibbles. Probiotics are very important in improving the overall function of the digestive and immune system.
The presence of chelated minerals ensures easier absorption and utilization of essential minerals in the body.
The only controversial ingredient is tomato pomace which is a by-product produced when processing tomato sauce or tomato catsup. The tomato used during processing may have been sprayed with pesticides thus tainting the dog food with toxic chemicals.
Although there are many dog owners who are satisfied with the Chicken Soup dog food, there are also those who are not satisfied with their protein compositions which, in some formulas, dip down to as low as 20% that what is required. There are also dog owners who reported that their dogs suffered from gastrointestinal upsets and hypersensitivity reactions.
Overall we believe this is a good quality food and would recommend this brand.
