Kirkland Signature Range Super Premium Puppy Chicken, Rice and Vegetable formula is manufactured by Diamond and sold at Costco’s around the United States.

Kirkland Signature Range Super Premium Puppy Chicken, Rice and Vegetable Dog Food Review

For the price it will be hard to find a brand of this quality. Usually dog food brands in the price range of Kirkland are overloaded with grains and fillers. The first thing we are going to do is take a look at the first five ingredients.

Kirkland Signature Range Super Premium Puppy Chicken, Rice and Vegetable First Five Ingredient:

Chicken – Chicken is the first ingredient. Since this ingredient is not in the form of a meal it still has its water weight before hand, which if removed it would more than likely fall further down in the ingredients list. Water makes up approximately 80% of this ingredient.

Chicken meal – Chicken meal is probably this formulas first ingredient. Since meat is a natural part of a dogs diet we are pleased to see this as the first ingredient.

Whole grain brown rice – The premium dog food brands will exclude all grains from their ingredients. Does having grains make this food horrible? Not necessarily. Whole grain brown rice is a decent quality of grain so it doesn’t lower the quality of the food that much.

Cracked pearl barley -Also a decent quality grain.

Egg Product -Egg as a whole is a decent ingredient.

Beet pulp is also found as an ingredient and has been linked to allergies in dogs. It comes in the form of a by product.

Kirkland Signature Range Super Premium Puppy Chicken, Rice and Vegetable Full Ingredients List:

Kirkland Signature Range Lamb and Rice Adult is manufactured by Diamond and sold at Costco’s around the United States. Kirkland Signature Range Lamb & Rice Adult falls in the middle of the spectrum of dog food quality. I am going to break this food down and give an unbiased review.

Kirkland Signature Range Lamb and Rice Dog Food Review

Kirkland Signature Range Lamb & Rice Adult falls in the middle of the spectrum of dog food quality. For the price you are getting a pretty decent bag of dog food. Other brands in the same price range fill their bags with filler and overload them with grains.

First five ingredients of Kirkland Signature Range Lamb and Rice Adult:

Lamb – Since this meat ingredient is not in form of a meal, it means before it was put into the dog food its weight consist of its water weight as well.Which ultimately means that after being cooked and included into the dog food its true place in the ingredient list would drop, due to the loss of its water weight.

Lamb meal – Lamb meal would now be the first true ingredient. It is preferred that the first ingredient of dog food would be a protein source in the form of a meat. Dogs naturally feed of meat and they need it in their diet.

Whole grain brown rice -the entire product obtained by grinding the rice kernels after the hulls have been removed.

Rice flour –

White rice - Rice is a goof source of additional proteins and adds additional carbohydrates.

If were to take the 3rd, 4th and 5th ingredient and combine them together rice would probably be the first true ingredient. Its hard telling what the true weight would be. Manufactures split these ingredients up to try and fool people into thinking what they want. Is rice is bad ingredient? No. But when is the last time you saw a dog in the while eating some rice?

As with all the Kirkland dog food brands we were unable to find a statement of them using Ethoxyquin free fish in their Kirkland Signature Range Lamb and Rice Adult formula.

Beet pulp is also found as an ingredient and has been linked to allergies in dogs. It comes in the form of a by product. This brand of food would rank higher in the quality scale if it did not include Beet pulp.

Kirkland Signature Range Lamb and Rice Adult Full Ingredients List:

Other notable ingredients would include fish meal at the 9th ingredient. We couldn’t find any where on the manufactures website a statement saying they use Ethoxyquin free fish. Ethoxyquin has been linked to cancer in rats and is commonly found in fish aught by commercial boats that cannot be used for human consumption.

Kirkland Dog Food Review

Kirkland dog food made by Diamond is conveniently sold at Costco’s world wide. The Kirkland product line has 6 dry food formulas designed to meet the individual requirements of specific ages of dogs. The Kirkland Signature Adult Dog Formula has two variances, chicken and lamb, which gives a healthy choice for hypersensitive dogs. The Kirkland dog food products are less expensive compared to other well-rated dog food brands however their prices does not compromise the quality of their dog food lines. Last time we checked it was 17.99-23.99 for a 40lb bag, depending on the formula. Due to the price many are lead to believe that this food is just another low quality dog food, however, we believe that Kirkland dog food falls in the middle of the food quality spectrum.

Compared to other budget-friendly dog food brands, Kirkland dog food formulas don’t incorporate corn, soy, or wheat among the first five ingredients. There is also no mention of unspecified animal by-products which are often from questionable sources that can further degrade the quality of the dog food.

Chicken and lamb are the main sources of animal proteins for Kirkland dog food formulas. This is a good protein source for dogs of all ages. Whole grains including brown rice and cracked pearl barley also form the basal ingredients.

Although chicken is an excellent protein source, it is used raw which means it still contains 80% water which is lost when processed, leaving only a small part of its original weight. This is probably the reason for the addition of the chicken meal which is a meat concentrate and contains 300% more protein compared to fresh or raw chicken.

Brown rice is a good source of complex carbohydrates which can be easy to digest after it has already undergone processing. Another ingredient that supplies starchy carbohydrate, fiber and other nutrients is Barley.

Chicken fat is a by-product obtained from rendering chicken. It is rich in omega-6 fatty acids and linoleic acid which are important in the different physiological processes of the body. It is important for dog food manufacturers to specify the source of fat in order to assess the quality of the ingredient. There are dog food manufacturers that list down this ingredient as “animal fat”.

Among the different ingredients, beet pulp has been met with skepticism because although it is a high-fiber ingredient, it is often used as inexpensive filler.

Other minor ingredients which contribute to the over-all nutrition value of the dog food include potato which is a good source of highly digestible carbohydrates; fish meal provides additional animal protein; flaxseed which is an excellent plant source of omega-3 fatty acids and soluble fiber.

There is no mention, though, of probiotics or beneficial bacteria which is present in many top-rated dog food products.

Customer Reviews

The most common feedback relates to the price of Kirkland dog food products -it is not every day that one can get a good quality dog food at such low prices. There are dog owners who agree that the high protein from quality meat sources is great for their dog’s hair coat, body weight, and energy—all these positive feedbacks even though their dogs were eating less compared to other dog food brands.

Negative feedbacks include diarrhea in first time users, manifestation of allergy symptoms, digestive problems that include vomiting, loose stools, smelly gas, and an upset stomach.
