As with all dog food recipes the first thing we are going to look at are the first five ingredients. The first five ingredients are a good indication of the quality of the dog food. When looking at the first five ingredients you want to make sure there is plenty of meat and grains are minimal.
BLUE Weight Control Formula Dog Food for Adult Dogs First Five Ingredients:

Deboned Chicken is the first ingredient in this recipe. This ingredient is inclusive of its water content. Meaning that once the water is removed and this ingredients becomes a dried ingredient it will weigh significantly less, thus making it fall further in the ingredients list.

I am curious if anybody else has ahd the same problem with this food as my dog. I have a Stafford/Lab mix& she had to lose weight before ACL surgery. Well you can’t keep you dog on RX dog food forever, so I spoke with dog food reps at PetSmart & they all agreed that the Blue Weight Control would be great to keep her on. From the 1st time she ate it, she had horrible gas, no loose stools, just bad smelling gas. Then after about 2 or 3 days of feeding it to her without any other food mixed in, she started waking up in the middle of the night to throw-up. She’d go all day no problem, but in late evening to over night, every night, she’d throw-up.
Has anybody else had this problem?
I actually have mixed feelings about this dog food. I have two Bichon mixes and they are both puppies. I started feeding them Blue Buffalo Puppy formula and even when I mixed just a bit in, one of my puppies (Charlie), has such loose stool, that I couldn’t even pick it up if we were to go to parks and what not.
My other puppy, Newton, seemed to take it just fine, however, had horrible gas. Not only did he have gas, he also gained a ton of weight! I couldn’t believe it. The vet told me it wasn’t just a growth spurt, but that he was actually getting thick around the stomach due to the amount of protein.
I just switched the two to Nutra’s Puppy Chicken and Oatmeal dog food. Not only do they scarf down every bowl because of the taste, Charlie’s stool is much more solid and we’ll see how Newton’s weigh fluctuates.
I’m coming to a conclusion that maybe this food was just not meant for smaller breeds. But it is made with great ingredients.
I have been feeding three of my four dachshunds Blue Buffalo weight control formula for 8-9 months. They absolutely love it and we have had no side effects; i.e., gas, loose stools, etc. I would highly recommend it.
Response to Dave. I wanted to change both my dogs (Shelties) to the same food and after careful consideration chose Blue Buffalo Weight Management. One of my dogs refused it after the transition to over half BB and less of her old food was mixed together. My other dog, now that she is almost totally transitioned to BB, has thrown up twice this week, and tonight she tried to throw up without success and is under the weather a bit. She does seem to burp a little but she was like that with her old food. No gas though. After reading your comment, I think it is the food and not something she ate in the yard. I am very careful about keeping an eye on her so I thought it was unlikely she ate something other than the food we provide. Glad I found your comment.
Our 7 year old Boxer had some weight issues. We began feeding him the Blue Buffalo Weight formula. He liked it but was very uptight and anxious .. kind of like he was on a caffeine high. Checked with the guy at the local feed store and he said this food has tea in it. We switched him off the weight formula and onto the regular formula and the caffeine high was over. Be careful when putting your dogs on this or any weight control food. Do you homework and ask what is in it to make it weight control.
It seems that I have been having the same problem with this food as most people. My german shepherd had horrible gas and has had bad diarrhea since switching to this food. To the point I looked for a recall. My schnauzer has had the same except he has bloody diarrhea. We even went for stool studies and a parvo test because of it. The both got medications and I got a $800 vet bill! Thanks Blue Buffalo! RIght now we have switched to a no meat food to calm their stomachs then we will advance to a chicken free diet. Any suggestions?
