BLUE Large Breed Formula Dog Food for Adult Dogs Review
As with all dog food recipes the first thing we are going to look at are the first five ingredients. The first five ingredients are a good indication of the quality of the dog food. When looking at the first five ingredients you want to make sure there is plenty of meat and grains are minimal.
BLUE Large Breed Formula Dog Food for Adult Dogs First Five Ingredients:
- Deboned Chicken
- Chicken Meal
- Whole Ground Brown Rice
- Whole Ground Barley
- Oatmeal
Deboned Chicken is the first ingredient in this recipe. This ingredient is inclusive of its water content. Meaning that once the water is removed and this ingredients becomes a dried ingredient it will weigh significantly less, thus making it fall further in the ingredients list.
Chicken Meal is the second ingredient and is a named meat ingredient. A dog’s diet needs to based on the fact that dogs need meat and protein that derives from meat.
The third, fourth and fifth ingredients are all grains. All of these ingredients are of decent quality.

I switched my black lab Angus a month ago to blue buffalo he was on a popular dog food but he was getting heavy and his coat was dull. After comparing the ing. the Blue Buffalo large breed blew away the popular dog food. Angus’s coat is soft and shiny, he has lost some weight, and he loves the new dog food.
The rating by the admin on here has to be a typo. There is no way this food is a 5/10 dog food. I would personally give it an 8.5 to 9 out of 10. The only reason I wouldn’t give it a solid ten is because it isn’t completely grainless. My GSD absolutely loves it, her energy level is through the roof, and her coats looks excellent. The Blue Buffalo Wilderness dog food would be the only other dog food I would recommend over this food, but it is a very rich food and not for all dogs.
I love blue buffalo. Some friends of ours have a yellow lab the same age as our chocolate lab, they keep trying to get me to switch to Science Diet but their dog sheds like nobody’s business, he’s overweight and every time both of them wrestle my dog always has the upper hand because of his energy level. He also runs faster and longer, swims forever, and jumps higher. His coat is shinier and I only brush it once a week if I remember. Since Charlie was our first dog, we experimented with a lot of different foods, asked for a lot of advice, read a lot of reviews. There is absolutely nothing that we have found that matches the results we got with Blue Buffalo. The rating from the editor should absolutely be higher.
Where do I buy this food? What is the price?
With only one Meat meal and 3 grains in the first 5 ingredients this food is mostly grain.Dogs need food that is mostly meat, they really don’t need any grain at all in their diet.I’m not saying this is a horrible food but for the money their is much better available…for anyone feeding this I would suggest adding some real fresh meat or using the Wilderness formula by Blue Buffalo. http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-industryexposed/grains-in-dog-food-1/

Michelle, I would guess the meat is at about 25-28%. But I like Whole brown rice and Oatmeal, “waaaaay” better than I do any other ingredients besides meat and eggs. Both are better than any fruits and vegetables in my book. Now I do not like barley, nor am I a big fan of potatoes, but I do like sweet potatoes. That is why I am a big fan of California Natural. We all know that no matter what product you feed, you should be adding fresh meat as often as your dollars carry you.
Blue Buffalo is a great food. I’ve had my gsd on the top dry brands such as Orijen and Acana, also Innova. He is currently on BB and doing and looking better than he was on the other foods. He doesn’t do that well on the grain free foods. It all depends on the particular dog. I also add cooked chicken or hamburger a few times a week.
