BLUE Fish and Sweet Potato Recipe Dog Food for Adult Dogs Review
As with all dog food recipes the first thing we are going to look at are the first five ingredients. The first five ingredients are a good indication of the quality of the dog food. When looking at the first five ingredients you want to make sure there is plenty of meat and grains are minimal.
BLUE Fish and Sweet Potato Recipe Dog Food for Adult Dogs First Five Ingredients:
- Whitefish
- Whole Ground Brown Rice
- Whole Ground Barley
- Menhandden Fish Meal
- Oatmeal
Whitefish is the first ingredient in this recipe. This ingredient is inclusive of its water content. Meaning that once the water is removed and this ingredients becomes a dried ingredient it will weigh significantly less, thus making it fall further in the ingredients list.
Menhandden Fish Meal is the fourth ingredient and is a named meat ingredient. A dog’s diet needs to based on the fact that dogs need meat and protein that derives from meat.
The second, third and fifth ingredients are all grains. All of these ingredients are of decent quality.

My Standard Poodle is a chowhound and loves the food. He seems to be doing fine on it. He’s been on it for one month now and the only difference I see so far is that he is a little aggressive. Growls at me when I try to dicipline him when he is naughty. But generally seems healthy and active. He is a six year old service dog and I need him to be alert but friendly. Not that I am implying that the food has made him aggressive. Just that that and moving are the only changes we have made. Will rate again after we have seen the results for a few months.
My oldest Catahoula Telly has a sensitive stomach and is doing much better on this than the prescription food the vet had him on. No more runs or whining. He is finally maintaining a healthy full weight and good energy.
We tried the Chicken and Brown Rice formula first, after switching from Science Diet. The dogs liked it okay, not as enthusiastic as I had hoped. One is a very enthusiastic (Labrador) gobbler.
THEN, we tried the Fish and Sweet potato recipe. (My dogs both love fish). They liked it the first 2 days. After the third day (and it is kept cool and dry inside air conditioning), when placed in their dishes, the formula seems to have a strong ammonia odor. Within a few hours of the food in their dishes (they do not eat the fish and sweet potato formula right away), the ammonia smell is strong enough to cause gagging.
We’re bagging it up, and taking it to the curb. Expensive experiment!
I’m probably going to switch to raw feeding.
Marsha Hammonds, if i were you i would take the food back to the store for a refund. Most stores will give a refund/store credit. I personally wouldn’t use Blue,it is recalled alot. You don’t have to spend alot to get a decent food. I have had good luck with 4health-Tractor Supplies brand 4 star food,Taste of the wild five star food,Merrick 5 star,Fromm five star.
