BLUE Chicken and Brown Rice Recipe Dog Food for Puppies Review
As with all dog food recipes the first thing we are going to look at are the first five ingredients. The first five ingredients are a good indication of the quality of the dog food. When looking at the first five ingredients you want to make sure there is plenty of meat and grains are minimal.
BLUE Chicken and Brown Rice Recipe Dog Food for Puppies First Five Ingredients:
- Deboned Chicken
- Chicken Meal
- Whole Ground Brown Rice
- Whole Ground Barley
- Oatmeal
Deboned Chicken is the first ingredient in this recipe. This ingredient is inclusive of its water content. Meaning that once the water is removed and this ingredients becomes a dried ingredient it will weigh significantly less, thus making it fall further in the ingredients list.
Chicken Meal is the second ingredient and is a named meat ingredient. A dog’s diet needs to based on the fact that dogs need meat and protein that derives from meat.
The third, fourth and fifth ingredients are all grains. All three of these ingredients are of decent quality.

Review

hey i got a new pup and im not sure if i should go with blue buffalo or kirklands brand from costco they both seem like really good food?
We just bought our bully and switched him slowly from iams puppy to blue buffalo chicken and brown rice, and he loves it and is doing much better on it!!!! I give this food 5 stars so far!
I’m a new puppy mom needing some advice. I have a 4 month old Labrador that we are slowly switching from Purina Pro Plan to Blue Buffalo Chicken and Brown Rice. My question is, at a yer old, when we will switch her to an adult formula, which one do you recommend? I’ve done a lot of research, but would like to hear personal accounts/experiences. Thanks in advance!
Not a review just a question?
Why does everyone buy exspensive dog food? Ingrediente Right? No one wants to give their pets the cheap food because it is so bad with all the fillers and dyes ect…So you go out read labels and spend a bunch of money for dog food that says it is natural and meat is 1st ingredient, what a joke. Why not just feed you dog what you eat at home and save your money. Yes there is things they shouldnt have, so look out for those but table scrapes are the best way to go.
I supplement my dogs diet with meat or eggs every night and I always cook chicken or eggs. The problem with feeding table scraps is the seasoning we use. Dogs systems were never meant to eat this and CAN cause some problems. When I eat a steak, burger or, I just cutoff a little for him and cook his with nothing on it. But he does get quite a bit of raw meat. I don’t believe dogs need vegetables, fruit and other grains or such in their diet. But I do feed a very good kibble (Orijen) and I do add supplements. And at 108 pounds that would be a ton of table scrapes. Most of us use good dog food cause it is just so much better for them. Check this site out.

Kristen, I am still feeding Large breed puppy food to my dog and he is 16 months old. It is the same price as the adult version so it really is no big deal. In my case I feed Orijen and I like the fact it has a lot of glucosamine in it. I well buy one more bag and that well be it on the the big boy food.
Blue Buffalo is the worst crap on the market!!!Here’s my story I have a 3 month old Australian Shepard. The breeder had her on Purina Pro Select. After being convinced by the Blue Buffalo salesman @ our local Petsmart I purchased Blue Buffalo with Chicken and Brown Rice for puppies. I gradually replaced her Purina Pro to the Blue Buffalo after a day or 2 of only being on the Blue Buffalo she became sick vomiting and diarrhea. I consulted several vets and the Breeder and they all told me to get her off of the Blue Buffalo immediately! I did so and took her into the vets where they gave her a special prescription diet of Hills Prescription Diet for Gastrointestinal Health and several Metronidazole Pills. She’s all better now and back to her lovable self. We’ll go back to the Purina Pro!! My advice stay away from Blue Buffalo!!!
I can’t understand why some people state “STAY AWAY” from Blue Buffalo because my dog had problems with it. There are so many reasons why one dog may react and 10,000 others may not. Allergies? Just doesn’t agree with? Switched too fast. It could be that there is one thing in the product that “your” dog is allergic to. I have a labradoodle that was on Eukanuba for the first 12 most of her life (which was recommended by someone who had their dog on it for years. While Bind did fine, I decided for a few different reasons that I wanted to switch her. One being her weight, few pounds under, (yes she ate well & normal) hair (not as shiny as it might be, etc.) slowly switched to Blue, first the salmon. She gained a few pounds and I definately noticed a difference in her hair. Not earth shattering, but nicer. The important thing I noticed was her energy, personality and disposition. Labradoodles are good natured dogs and she was….but since being on it….she is more satisfied, more energy, just happier. I highly recommend it.
This is coming from someone whose daughter tried to convince me several times in her first year and hesitated because it was more costly. You factor in that it really isn’t that much more and so worth it…IF it works for you. She is now almost 2 and doing great! Happy Holidays all!!
OOPS, meant to say…”because your dog may had problems while on it.”
My dog has been on Blue since we got him. However, we did try Solid Gold first because it was our original first choice. The kibble was too big for him, so we switched to Blue–he loved it and has been incredibly healthy. After reading other reviews, we also tried to switch him slowly to Orijen–it was just too rich for him and gave him horrible diarrhea. We avoided Wellness products as their puppy treats also gave him trouble.
In the end, we’re extraordinarily happy with Blue…and our little baby Cocker Spaniel is as well.
I started my 3 month old puppy on Chicken and Brwon rice puppy food and she loves it. The ingredients are key and you dont have to feed them as much. Most foods have chicken meal as their first ingredient which is absolutely disgusting. Just make sure your feeding the right portion because it can lead to weight gain per the vet. Great product!
just got a husky/german shepherd mix and she doesn’t like anything unless our lab eats it first so we just mix their iams and blue together. she had perfect stool and ate enough but then got diarrhea which we attributed to the pigs ears which were a poor decision on my part. so if her stool goes back to normal i don’t see a problem with this brand…yet.
I love Blue thank god we have a food we can trust to feed our dogs. My dogs have such a shine coat and are very happy and healthy. I would never use anything but blue.
We have a 4 month old Goldendoodle who’s been eating the Blue Chicken and Rice puppy formula since we brought her home at 8 weeks. I did a lot of research prior to picking this food. I’m happy with the decision because she’s doing great. Great energy, soft, shiny coat and no bowel issues at all. I would recommend this. Maybe un-related, but she’s had only 2 accidents in the house and that was when she first arrived. She seems able to hold it until we take her for a walk.
I’m sure Blue Buffalo is fine for some dogs and not so much for others. When we adopted our Yorkie, he came with Purina for pups. He was itching like crazy. We tried BB chicken and brown rice for pups. He didn’t really like it. So, we pulled it up and put it down later. We literally had to stand there and hand feed him the stuff to eat it. A month later and we still have a large portion of the regular sized bag. We just switched to the Kirkland’s puppy brand after comparing the ingredients. They are very similar. The vast difference is perhaps 2% more protein. This morning, I mixed in some of the new Kirklands with the old BB. Believe it or not, he tore in to that bowl. He’s never done that before. When he finished, all that was left was the BB. He wouldn’t eat it, so I put down a bit more of the Kirklands and he ate it all.
I’ll be looking for any adverse effects in the coming days. Hopefully there won’t be any and maybe he’ll put on some much needed weight.
