What a great resource for all of us dog lovers! I heartily agree that "premium, organic, and holistic dog food" is the way to go for your pet!

I’ve been doing a lot of research on dog foods, sought various opinions from both vets and just other dog owners. Read through the well noted dog food advisor site and recently and another one that call themselves dog food analysis etc etc. I’m from Australia and recently acquired a beautiful 2 year old Jack Russell bitch. I have her for about 3 months now and started her on the supermarket Pedigree brand kibble, not knowing any better at the time (Note the artificial colouring assortment in the kibble – Might as well just feed her Mars bars). Anyway, I then thought I’d investigate what good foods exist. In the meantime I changed her food from Pedigree to Optimum (Australian owned brand I believe and endorsed by a vet’s TV show called Bondi Vet. I then was sucked in by a pet store rep on buying Purina Pro Plan which my bitch has just completed. While she ate all the above brands mentioned with out much physically changed appearance and energy levels other than her coat wasn’t as smooth and shiny as it is now when I’d first acquired her and when she was being fed Pedigree, she is now on what I finally believe after all my research to be amongst the top choices, Artemis Fresh Mix Maximal kibble. And what I’ve significantly noticed since weening her on Artemis, is that her stool is smaller and the frequency of her defecation had also decreased. I’m no expert, but I’ll bet this is a good thing! However her flatulence has somewhat increased just a little, but I put this down to the more natural ingredients in Artemis and don’t believe it to be a bad thing.

From everything I’ve read and researched I’m a believer in grain free dog diets.

However, from 2 different vets I’ve consulted, they’ve collectively recommended Science Diet, Royal Canin, and another Australian brand formulated by a supposedly and probably prominent vet called Vets All Natural. Whilst I have not tried Science Diet nor Royal Canin for my bitch, the negative reviews and opinions outweigh the positive ones for the 2 of the 3 latter mentioned brands. I haven’t heard or read any opinions on Vets All Natural from other sources as yet but I understand this one to be a supplement mix that one is supposed to add to raw meat before its construed as a meal for one’s dog. I prefer complete kibble formulations for the convenience and yet I want to have my bitch on the best possible. Time will tell whether I will stick with Artemis, but for now it appears superior!

I just hope that the statement regarding that Artemis is not gamma irradiated when imported into Australia is true. Australian customs and more specifically, the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries advise that they have no reason to disbelieve Artemis’s Australian website statement of their non irradiation guarantee.

I noticed that some of you had posted that you were thinking about using Innova. Just wanted to let you know that Procter and Gamble just bought out the company that makes this. From what I've read, they had previously bought out the makers of Iams and had switched ingredients in it to less healthy fillers when they bought them and then denied having changed the formulas.

I actually found this site as I was researching a food to switch from Innova. My thought is that history tends to repeat itself and I don't want to be duped into thinking I am feeding my dog the best when I am not.

Jess and Michelle, we have a new puppy maltipoo who is being fed purina pro plan select puppy. She developed tear stains and I started researching food. After hearing in 2 pet stores how great this food is, they changed their tune and recommended avoderm and natural balance. I bought natural balance sweet potato and salmon but the dog wouldn't eat it due to kibble size. So I started to look into other options and am now leaning towards Orijen Puppy, Artemis Puppy small breed, innova puppy, merrick puppy plate, solid gold hundechen flocken puppy, wellness just 4 puppy, acana puppy small breed or california natural puppy. What is scaring me about some of these foods is the protein content. Too high for a toy breed? Also some have tomato pumace which I have read can contribute to tear stains. I really want a good quality food that is good for her, her coat, her energy level (more of a quiet laid back dog), as well as avoids anything that contributes to tear stains. Which of these foods would you recommend based on what I have written above? I am steering clear of avoderm based on the toxicity debate.

Jess,

We are leaning towards Artemis,TOTW, or Innova for our new baby Yorkie who is 12 wks old @ 2.2lbs . He is on Nutro currently

I'm thinking that we should keep the protien level @ 30% or lower based on what I'm learning here. I respect your knowledge and welcome your's and other folks replies.

I just recieved this e-mail and it is also on their website. So if Diamond makes their food, is this BS or does Diamond have to buy from who Artemis tells them to? Or does Artemis buy the ingredients and Diamond just cooks and process the food. I think companies like Artemis and TOTW buy the ingredients and then Diamond makes the food. I do however feel companies like Kirkland are not going to put that much effort into it.

Artemis will now be using naturally preserved fish meal in all our products.

We have switched our supplier of fish meal and now our fish meal will be naturally preserved with mixed tocopherols (vitamin E). The supplier we have acquired has obtained all of the required permits in order to use natural preservatives instead of ethoxyquin.

You guys, Artemis kibble is made by both Diamond and Pied Piper; they do not make their own food as stated above (by Artemis Co). Their canned food is made by Evangers. I obtained this info by speaking directly with them.
Kind of takes away from the desirability factor.

After my third email and a phone call they finally responded. They said they did not get my first 2 emails. What a lie that was because they got my third one and all were sent to the same address. It's to bad they have such a clown doing their public relations. I've talked to several people who say this guy is just down right rude. Ya know what, he is a refection of that company and I well never buy or recomend their products.

Well, it looks like they are not going to respond. Thats to bad because it looked like they had a pretty good product. But I did notice the formula for Med/large breed puppy is different everywhere I looked . On the bag I have it is even different, better, but who knows for sure. I have found 3 different formulas for this product, just a little odd I'd say. Sure wish I could retract the stars I gave them. If they don't respond by tomorrow at noon they are off my list....

I just sent my second e-mail off to these guys, but this time I did not say what my question was about. If they do not respond I would not trust them.
