Artemis Dog Food Review
Artemis dog food is made and manufactured by, Artemis Company. The company was Established 1998 and based in North Hollywood, California.
We highly recommend Artemis dog food and believe that is one of the best dog foods available.
According to its website, Artemis dog food products are tailored with a holistic approach to create… a food that balances all the necessary nutrients and support the natural healing process”.
The Artemis dog food line is subdivided into three main formulas—the Fresh Mix, the Professional Formula, and the Osopure formulas.
The fresh mix formula is designed to meet the specific needs of the different life stages and dogs which need special diets. Osopure has a power formula designed to meet the high protein requirements of pregnant and lactating bitches, and puppies. It has also an immune support formula. There is only one Artemis professional formula.
Among the different variants and formulas of Artemis dog food products, chicken and/or chicken meal is often considered the main animal protein source. Although raw chicken is a good source of protein, it still contains about 80% water thus when it undergoes processing, only about 80% of the meat is left. Since chicken meal is considered as meat concentrate, it contains much higher amounts of protein (approximately 300% higher than raw meat), however the problem lies in the fact that chicken meal is often made from parts of the chicken which have been deemed unfit for human consumption.
Other sources of animal-based protein include turkey and fish. In their raw form, they also contain a considerable amount of water which evaporates or is removed when processing, leaving only a small amount of protein source.
Artemis dog food formulas also incorporate whole grain sources which constitute the carbohydrate component of the diet. Brown rice is an easily digestible complex carbohydrate. Aside from being rich in carbohydrates, barley has a higher glycemic index and is also a good source of fiber. Since millet is gluten-free, it is a hypoallergenic ingredient which is rich in vitamins B and other essential minerals.
Artemis dog food formulas also incorporate sources of omega-6 fatty acids such as chicken fat and certain fish oils. Glucosamine and chondroitin are also incorporated in some formulas to support bones and joints.
Some ingredients which have been met with some form of doubt include tomato pomace, beet pulp, canola oil, and garlic.
Tomato pomace is a by-product when tomato is processed into soup, catsup or juice. Although it has a high nutrient and fiber content, some sees it as an inexpensive filler. There is also a danger of pesticide residue when tomatoes which have been recently sprayed with pesticides are used for processing.
Although beet pulp is rich in fiber and, it is also considered an inexpensive filler.
Canola oil has been lauded for its omega-3 content but many still consider it as an unhealthy fat.
Artemis also claims the addition of probiotics to boost digestive and immune functions. Their products also incorporate chelated minerals that assures easier absorption and utilization of essential minerals in the body.
Customer Reviews
Many dog owners are satisfied with the quality ingredients present in Artemis dog food. They reported that dogs given Artemis have better energy levels and better joint health.
Since quality does not come cheap, dog owners often gripe about Artemis being an expensive dog food. A few dog owners also reported of allergic reactions in dogs which can be attributed to chicken and/or skim milk.
We highly recommend Artemis and believe that it is a very high quality dog food produced by a responsible company.

Artemis Dog Food Consumer Review

How come you haven’t rated the fresh mix for adult dogs?
I agree with Rock. I don’t understand why you haven’t rated the Artemis Fresh mix for Adult dogs, which is one of the most popular ones.
Jess,You stated that you are going to try Artemis You didn’t say which formulation Maximal lists chicken fat 3rd on their ingredient list this was researched at perdue university and proven to contribute to Bloat in large breed dogs.I posted this info at a couple of other sites I wanted to make sure that you saw it.
P.S. I know that you don’t like this site but I got that info on DFA.
I got a bag of the med/large puppy which doesn’t have the chicken fat at 3. I did e-mail them today about the use of ethoxyquin it’s late friday so I dont expect to hear from them until next week. The food I got has salmon meal but no fish meal. So my new list is gonna have to wait until I hear from them.
Guess what ? They don’t make Maximal any more, DFA better get on the stick because a lot of these formulas seem to be changing alot. I can’t get in Wshington State so this will be my one and only bag.

Humm, I was just on their site and they changed from Salmon meal to fish meal. That makes ethoxyquin a way bigger deal. They also added rice at number 7 and went from whole brown rice to brown rice, I’ll have to find out the difference between the 2. Gotta feeling this product well be moving down my list, or even off if they don’t respond to my e-mail. But the first 4 ingredients are still meat and it seems this is be getting harder to find these days. They did add Duck down the list at 12. Humm, still seems to be a real good dog food.
I just sent my second e-mail off to these guys, but this time I did not say what my question was about. If they do not respond I would not trust them.
Well, it looks like they are not going to respond. Thats to bad because it looked like they had a pretty good product. But I did notice the formula for Med/large breed puppy is different everywhere I looked . On the bag I have it is even different, better, but who knows for sure. I have found 3 different formulas for this product, just a little odd I’d say. Sure wish I could retract the stars I gave them. If they don’t respond by tomorrow at noon they are off my list….
After my third email and a phone call they finally responded. They said they did not get my first 2 emails. What a lie that was because they got my third one and all were sent to the same address. It’s to bad they have such a clown doing their public relations. I’ve talked to several people who say this guy is just down right rude. Ya know what, he is a refection of that company and I well never buy or recomend their products.
You guys, Artemis kibble is made by both Diamond and Pied Piper; they do not make their own food as stated above (by Artemis Co). Their canned food is made by Evangers. I obtained this info by speaking directly with them.
Kind of takes away from the desirability factor.
I just recieved this e-mail and it is also on their website. So if Diamond makes their food, is this BS or does Diamond have to buy from who Artemis tells them to? Or does Artemis buy the ingredients and Diamond just cooks and process the food. I think companies like Artemis and TOTW buy the ingredients and then Diamond makes the food. I do however feel companies like Kirkland are not going to put that much effort into it.
Artemis will now be using naturally preserved fish meal in all our products.
We have switched our supplier of fish meal and now our fish meal will be naturally preserved with mixed tocopherols (vitamin E). The supplier we have acquired has obtained all of the required permits in order to use natural preservatives instead of ethoxyquin.
Jess,
We are leaning towards Artemis,TOTW, or Innova for our new baby Yorkie who is 12 wks old @ 2.2lbs . He is on Nutro currently
I’m thinking that we should keep the protien level @ 30% or lower based on what I’m learning here. I respect your knowledge and welcome your’s and other folks replies.

Jess and Michelle, we have a new puppy maltipoo who is being fed purina pro plan select puppy. She developed tear stains and I started researching food. After hearing in 2 pet stores how great this food is, they changed their tune and recommended avoderm and natural balance. I bought natural balance sweet potato and salmon but the dog wouldn’t eat it due to kibble size. So I started to look into other options and am now leaning towards Orijen Puppy, Artemis Puppy small breed, innova puppy, merrick puppy plate, solid gold hundechen flocken puppy, wellness just 4 puppy, acana puppy small breed or california natural puppy. What is scaring me about some of these foods is the protein content. Too high for a toy breed? Also some have tomato pumace which I have read can contribute to tear stains. I really want a good quality food that is good for her, her coat, her energy level (more of a quiet laid back dog), as well as avoids anything that contributes to tear stains. Which of these foods would you recommend based on what I have written above? I am steering clear of avoderm based on the toxicity debate.
I noticed that some of you had posted that you were thinking about using Innova. Just wanted to let you know that Procter and Gamble just bought out the company that makes this. From what I’ve read, they had previously bought out the makers of Iams and had switched ingredients in it to less healthy fillers when they bought them and then denied having changed the formulas.
I actually found this site as I was researching a food to switch from Innova. My thought is that history tends to repeat itself and I don’t want to be duped into thinking I am feeding my dog the best when I am not.
