Acana Puppy Small breed Dog Food Review

As with all dog food recipes the first thing we are going to look at are the first five ingredients. The first five ingredients are a good indication of the quality of the dog food. When looking at the first five ingredients you want to make sure there is plenty of meat and grains are minimal.

First five ingredients of Acana Puppy Small Breed:

  1. Chicken Meal
  2. Steamed Oats
  3. Fresh Free-Run Chicken
  4. Peas
  5. Chicken Fat

Chicken Meal is the first ingredient and is a named meat ingredient. A dog’s diet needs to based on the fact that dogs need meat and protein that derives from meat.

Steamed Oats are going to be the main sources of grains this this recipe. Oats are of a decent quality.

Chicken is the third ingredient in this recipe. This ingredient is inclusive of its water content. Meaning that once the water is removed and this ingredients becomes a dried ingredient it will weigh significantly less, thus making it fall further in the ingredients list.

Peas are the fourth ingredient and are an excellent source of plant protein.

Chicken Fat is going to be the main source of fat. It’s safe to say that the ingredients before this ingredient are going to make up the majority of the dog food. This is a decent quality ingredient. You want to stay away from unidentified fat sources such as, “Animal Fat”

I own a 9 month old male shih tzu, his face is white so we can really see the red staining from his runny eyes. I have recently switched to Acana small breed food and I would like to know if this food helps to stop his eyes from running red. I was told that it would because of the all natural ingredients and grain free too. Has anyone has success with this?

Re the tearing eyes: I have a white cockapoo who has a lot of tearing. I recently took him to a vetrinary opthamologist to find out just what the problem is. First of all, he has healthy eyes. His tear ducts are a good size so that is not the problem. However, his upper and lower tear ducts do not line up properly and his bottom lid rolls in, preventing the tears from entering the lower duct and being carried away through the nose. Cosmetic repair surgery can be done but the cost is about $2000.00. The vet recommended that we use a solution of 1:20 (one drop of baby shampoo to 20 drops of water) to clean his eyelids daily and dry well. Also keep the hair away from his eyes as that also irritates his eyes and causes more frequent tearing.
It is also true that some dogs have allergy problems that cause more frequent tearing, but every dog is individual and what works for one might not work for another. I wonder though, does this happen more frequently with white dogs as I have other dogs without any problems like this.

I would like to know why Acana puppy foods do not have puppy packs to send along with the new pups to their homes.

Champion Pet Foods is one of the most responsible large pet food companies. Honest Kitchen and Primal obviously kick everyone else’s butt, but I would feed anything that Champion makes to my 16 year old dog.

Orijen and Acana are the BEST dog foods on the market today. The other is Party Animal and all the freeze dry like Honest Kitchen, Dr. Harvey, Grandma Lucy etc. Orijen is the only dry food I will feed my dogs. If I can’t cook for them they eat Party Animal only if I add a little chicken liver for favor. They will not eat Party Animal unless I add liver.

  7. Toby says:

I feed my current three dogs Acana light and Fit, with some added animal protein at supper, and broth either from turkey or liver. I have also fed with Orijen, but I don’t think a small quantity of grain will hurt and it saves money to get Acana. I’ve been purchasing only Champion products for years now. I am acquiring a new puppy tomorrow, who will be fed either Acana Puppy small breed or a blend of that with the Orijen puppy. I emailed Champion Pet foods to ask what they recommended for small breed puppies, and they sent me generous sample packs to try. I have the utmost faith in Champion pet foods, who care enough to use very excellent ingredients. My dogs’ only reason to go to the vet arises from grass seeds in the paws, or annual shots and exams. I’m in Canada also, and happy that there’s an excellent Canadian product available. No one need be concerned about quality when they use Champion pet foods products.
