Acana Puppy Large Breed Dog Food Review

As with all dog food recipes the first thing we are going to look at are the first five ingredients. The first five ingredients are a good indication of the quality of the dog food. When looking at the first five ingredients you want to make sure there is plenty of meat and grains are minimal.

Acana Puppy Large Breed First Five Ingredients Analysis:

  1. Chicken meal
  2. steamed oats
  3. Fresh Free-Run Chicken
  4. Peas
  5. Fresh De-Boned Salmon

Chicken Meal is the primary meat ingredient in Acana Puppy Large Breed Dog Food. This ingredient is going to make up the entire meat source. We feel that the meat content of this formula is insufficient. Dogs are natural carnivores and need a diet that is based of off meat and protein that comes from meat.

Steamed Oats are going to be the main sources of grains this this recipe. Oats are of a decent quality.

Chicken is the third ingredient in this recipe. This ingredient is inclusive of its water content. Meaning that once the water is removed and this ingredients becomes a dried ingredient it will weigh significantly less, thus making it fall further in the ingredients list.

Peas are the fourth ingredient and are of decent quality. Peas provide and excellent source of plant protein.

Salmon is the fourth ingredient in this recipe. This ingredient is inclusive of its water content. Meaning that once the water is removed and this ingredients becomes a dried ingredient it will weigh significantly less, thus making it fall further in the ingredients list.

My puppy is an American Bulldog crossed with Australian Shepherd. When I brought her home at age 5 months (she was 40 lbs at the time) I started feeding her Orijen Large Puppy 70% protein, 30% fruits and veggies, no grains. For the first few weeks I mixed the food with her old dog food, Science Diet, to slowly switch her over. Eventually, over a three week period she was eating just the Orijen Large Puppy. She was having a hard time with her stools. It was inconsistent – often she had diarrhea but sometime it would be fine. She also didn’t “dive” into her food – it almost seemed like she forced herself to eat it. The other thing was that her breath was strong and she began excreting some very fishy smells from her butt. I thought maybe she had issues with her anal glands. I decided to change her food to Acana Large Puppy to see if the food was the problem (Acana is made by the same company as Orijen, but 55% protien, 25% fruits and veggie, and 20% grain). She actually liked this food, wanted to eat it, and her fishy smell went away from her breath and butt. In the end I think the smell had to do with the quantity of Omega 3 oils in the Orijen – it was just too much for her – and I think my dog really needs some grains in her diet. Both foods give her a beautiful coat, and are equally good in terms of nutrition and quality, but it really depends how your dog reacts to and “processes” a product. I will stick with the Acana Puppy Large Breed until she is ready to eat adult food.

I have a three year old labrador that has had allergy problems with other food. While he had been on Acana Grasslands he does not lick his feet like he did before. He was on Origen Red, Wellness, Natural Balance and just about everything else. He loves his Acana. I do not have to mix anything to bribe him to eat. I now have a puppy on Soild gold wolf pup large brwwd and may change him to Acana when he is older. Thanks Acana!!

My Lab puppy has been on Acana Puppy Large Breed for about 1 month. He has nasty gas and sometimes loose stool since he’s been on it. I’m wondering if this is the food? Can anyone give me any advice? It’s my first time owning a puppy. Will the smell go away eventually?
