Acana Premium Adult Dog Food Review

As with all dog food recipes the first thing we are going to look at are the first five ingredients. The first five ingredients are a good indication of the quality of the dog food. When looking at the first five ingredients you want to make sure there is plenty of meat and grains are minimal.

Acana Premium Adult First Five Ingredients Analysis:

  1. Chicken meal
  2. Steamed Oats
  3. Fresh Free-Run Chicken
  4. Peas
  5. Brown Rice

Chicken Meal is the primary meat ingredient in Acana Puppy Large Breed Dog Food. This ingredient is going to make up the entire meat source. We feel that the meat content of this formula is insufficent. Dogs are natural carnivores and need a diet that is based of off meat and protein that comes from meat.

Steamed Oats are going to be the main sources of grains this this recipe. Oats are of a decent quality.

Chicken is the third ingredient in this recipe. This ingredient is inclusive of its water content. Meaning that once the water is removed and this ingredients becomes a dried ingredient it will weigh significantly less, thus making it fall further in the ingredients list.

Peas are the fourth ingredient and are an excellent source of plant protein.

Brown Rice is the fifth ingredient and is a decent quality grain that adds additional protein and carbohydrates to your dog’s food.

Hi, What can you tell me about your brand for dogs with allergies to chicken and egg proteins? I can’t find a review or ingredient list for this product. Thanks

I bought Acana Premium Adult Dog Food for my mini poodle and he eventually became unable to have bowel movements. He yelped out in pain because he would try to go and if the poop did come out it was a clay-like consistency and just compacted in and around the anus without it even dropping onto the ground. Even if I tried to mix a bit of Acana in with three-quarters of a different brand for the purpose of not letting it go to waste, he still had trouble and he’d jump up suddenly and look at his rear end as though he were having intestinal pains so I had to completely remove it from his diet. I then tried giving him only Eagle Pack Holistic Lamb and Rice and his stools were fine although he wouldn’t come running to gobble it down and often left some food in his dish. Now I have him on Nutrience Derma Lamb and Rice which is made by Hagen. He really likes the flavour of this food and he does gobble it up fast and some of his stools are fine but some of them are too mushy. This food is a great price and has herbs in it as well and lamb is the only meat source. I don’t see any ingredients in the list that concern me although I do think I can find something even better that results in firmer stools every time.

I have been using Acana for about a month with my two Min poodles and my 10 year old Yorkie.
They do need a lot of water with this food.
Stools are on the dry crumbly side and they are not keen to wolf it down as they did before with other foods.

I haven’t had any serious problems yet and check to make sure they do pass a motion everyday (often twice with acana).

When we first had this food they wouldn’t eat anything else, but now they seem much less hungry, which could be a plus since poodles are apt to steal if they are hungry (or just bored, or think I’m stupid leaving something in their reach).

I came to this site to find out how others were coping with it as I’m not sure my yorkie is thriving on it.

I used to feed our small breed Chihuahuas Innova, but switched to Acana when Innova was bought out. I ALWAYS give home cooking as well as dry food, as I think no matter what, a highly dried kibble, while nutrient dense, is not an ideal food for dogs. Our Home cooking contains Brown Rice, Whole Chicken Thighs with the skin (bone removed as they would choke on it), and from our garden: All organic carrots, potatoes with skin, Snap Peas, Kale, squash, and any other seasonal vegetable, and when it has finished the low to medium heat cooking, we add some human grade bone meal, some ground flax seed, small amount of sea salt and kelp, some some blueberries from the garden for their anti-oxidant capacity and a sprinkle of ascorbic acid powder. We then freeze it and feed at 2 meals a day with some kibble at the third meal. A Couple of time per week they share a soft boiled egg and frequently share some of my canned Sockeye salmon or sardines in spring water with me :-) These boys have BEAUTIFUL COATS and are strong and healthy! If I wouldn’t eat it, I won’t feed it to my dogs!
