Acana Adult Small Breed Dog Food Review

As with all dog food recipes the first thing we are going to look at are the first five ingredients. The first five ingredients are a good indication of the quality of the dog food. When looking at the first five ingredients you want to make sure there is plenty of meat and grains are minimal.

Acana Puppy Large Breed First Five Ingredients Analysis:

  1. Chicken meal
  2. Steamed Oats
  3. Fresh Free-Run Chicken
  4. Peas
  5. Brown Rice

Chicken Meal is the primary meat ingredient in Acana Puppy Large Breed Dog Food. This ingredient is going to make up the entire meat source. We feel that the meat content of this formula is insufficent. Dogs are natural carnivores and need a diet that is based of off meat and protein that comes from meat.

Steamed Oats are going to be the main sources of grains this this recipe. Oats are of a decent quality.

Chicken is the third ingredient in this recipe. This ingredient is inclusive of its water content. Meaning that once the water is removed and this ingredients becomes a dried ingredient it will weigh significantly less, thus making it fall further in the ingredients list.

Peas are the fourth ingredient and are an excellent source of plant protein.

Brown Rice is the fifth ingredient and is a decent quality grain that adds additional protein and carbohydrates to your dog’s food.

I have recently changed my 12 week old miniature schnauzer from Purina Puppy Plan to Acana Pairie harvest gradually. I’ve noticed that her bowel movements are getting pretty frequent. Is this normal?

    Thank you
    Marisa

marisa marotta, you don’t need to feed as much Acana as you would a low quality food as pro plan. You have to realize that any of the high grade dog foods are much more filling and require less amount. Here is a list of some of those higher quality foods.

    The A list
    1. Orijen
    2. Acana, Harvest, Pacifica & Grassland only.
    3. Blue Wilderness
    4. Wellness Core
    5. Go, Grain free only.
    6. Acana, the rest of Acana products.
    7. Taste of the Wild, wetlands & prairie only, Grain free
    8. Artemis
    9. Fromm
    10. Merrick, before grain.
    11. Horizon Legacy
    12. Evo

    The B list
    1. Now, Grain free.
    2. GO, free indurance,chicken,salmon only
    3. Merrick
    4. Evangers
    5. Timberwolf
    5. Instinct
    6. Wellness
    7. Solid Gold
    8. Canidae
    9. Natures Logic
    10. First Mate
    11. Kirkland, Costco
    12. California Natural

Jess, do you really think all these other people that prefer brands over some of the few we rotate really work for other dog food companies or your just picking w/ them a bit? LOL. As far as Nancy B case goes I’m really not sure how to diagnose that problem, I think seeing a vet is the correct thing to do, but I would also maybe look into a second opinion b/c I’m not sure there’s a dog food on the market right now that can cause those type problems on it’s own, it could possibly be a combination of the food and something genetic. And to marisa marotta I agree w/ Jess here, feed a little less to see if that control some of the frequent bowel movements with the dog, but if you notice that once feeding less the outside trips continue at the same pace and the total health of the dog starts to appear worse than previous, you might want to look into trying a diff brand or maybe even a different formula on the same brand.

When someone makes a statement like “Acana” should be banned or removed because it is a terrible dog food, their is no doubt in my mind that that person works for a certain dog food company. That person bashed Orijen on every site I go to. My god they allow ol roy, alpo, beneful, abady, bil jack, eukanuba, hills, Iams, purnia and other super low grade dog food to be sold, so why in the world would anyone bash Orijen or Acana.

Dogs are definitely NOT carnivores. They are omnivores just like us. Slightly more carnivorous then humans though but still far from carnivores.

I do work for a pet food company, and I have to say, I would never slam the competitor… Not every diet is good for every pet, just like humans, what works for one may not always work for another.Every diet has it’s pros and cons, depending on the breed, the health and the environment that the dog lives within. The best way to choose a diet for your pet is to decide what is important to you.. some people feel the overall health of the pet is the most mportant, and can overlook the more frequent bowel movements. Provided the dog is eating and drinking and the stool is of a good texture)..

Iv used Acana small breed for adults for about 5 years. My dog loves her food. When I first switched her ti Acana, she had to go out a few times more than normal. Once she got use to food, she was more regular when wanting to go outside. The best thing u can do when deciding what food to feed your dog is by talking to ur vet. My vet recommend Acana to me when I first adopted my dog and have never changed it since!
